Ah, The Blair Witch Project (1999), the scrappy lost-in-the-woods flick that put "found footage" on the map, for better or worse. I remember taking my wife to the theater to see this one, or perhaps more correctly, she took me to see it. It was on my radar but she had heard about and was keen to see the true story of three student filmmakers who went missing in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland while making a documentary about a local witch legend. She had heard about it through a morning radio show she listened to, and now mind you, she was and is no fan of horror, and had never asked to see horror film before or since, but such was the amount of hype generated by this film back in 1999, it was the film to see at that time. There was even the Curse of The Blair Witch mockumentary that aired on Syfy that supposedly told the backstory of the myth, a dedicated website that further explored the myth, all of these complete with faux newspaper clippings, interviews and TV footage. I having already been familiar with an earlier found footage entry, the seminal Cannibal Holocaust, was not swayed by the elaborate grassroots this-really-happened campaign, but I did not let onto her about it, I let her go in believing that we are about to see was a real documentary about doomed student filmmakers, and my experience was all the more thrilling for it.

The story such as it sets up that in 1994 three student filmmakers, Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard ventured into the Black Hills Forest to investigate a local legend known as the Blair Witch. They plan a three-day excursion into the woods with Hi-8 video and 16mm cameras, but that plan falls apart as they become hopelessly lost in the woods, at one point losing their map, travelling in circles, encountering strange stick figures and oddly arranged piles of stones, and hearing nerve-shredding sounds emanating from all around them. Their three0day trip turns into an eternity as they never do emerge from the woods, what happened to them remaining a mystery, until their footage was discovered one year later, and what we are watching is that footage. It's terrific set-up, the trio arrive in the village of Burkittsville and interview locals, some are aware of the legend, talking about a place called Coffin Rock and how children have been known to go missing in the area, and of a killer who murdered children in a house in the woods back in the 1940s, before trekking into woods. It's fall, the trees are barren, the ground is damp and covered in fallen leaves that crunch and rustle as they are trodden upon, the fall setting make the forest even more creepier.

At night after setting up camp they hear strange sounds from deep in the wood, what sounds like branches being broken; and another night they hear a baby crying and cackling sounds. After discovering a cemetery featuring several small cairns one of the stone formations is accidentally toppled, and it seems to be a bad omen for the trio. The next day the emerge from their tents and finds three small stone cairns have appeared near their tents. As they wander lost looking for a way out they also find unnerving bundles of sticks, and odd witchy-looking stick figures hanging from trees. Heather's the defacto leader of the expedition tries to maintain her cool as things get weird, but as it all starts to unravel the guys start to grow increasing scared, hostile and disturbed. Eventually one of them go missing, though they can hear his anguished cried echoing through the darkened woods. It seems they may have indeed discovered the Blair Witch.  Even Heather's stolid veneer begins to crack, at one point memorably offering an snot-nosed apology for the mess she's gotten the group into,

Even as jaded as I like to think myself as being I found and find The Blair Witch Project quite unnerving, I am continually rattled while watching it, the performances from the asctors have such a sense of realism to them, and I bought right into the we're lost, we're scared, and we're being stalked by a witch in the woods mindset of it all, it's quite a well-crafted bit of fright. This is a film that is shot with an eye for reality, there's no special effects, no digital frights, it's just a group of people lost in the woods scared to death when it turns out the local folklore is real, the only special effect is the sound design and our own rampant imaginations.
It worked for me then, and it works for me now, The Blair Witch Project is a real-deal horror classic, and while it spawned countless found footage imitators it's never been truly imitated, precious few that followed have even come close to it's blockbuster success, other than Paranormal Activity. I have to give kudos and accolades to Second Sight Films for undertaking this from the source elements rebuild, finally showing us the film as it was originally intended to be seen, offering three viewing options, and jam-packing it with deep-diving, definitive extras. As of the time of this review there is no announcement of a U.S. release of the new restored and remastered rebuild with the new extras, so this region-B locked release from Second Sight is the only way to see it the way it was intended to be. It's my understanding this Limited Edition set s now sold out, but there is a 2-disc standard release with all the same disc extras that is available from Second Sight Films direct.

Audio/Video: The Blair Witch Project (1999) arrives on 2-disc region-B locked Blu-ray from Second Sight Films, not only offering 3 versions of the films, but two of them are rebuilds from restored and remastered original source elements of Hi-8 video tapes and 16mm film, for both the Theatrical Cut and the Festival Cut, that was supervised and approved by co-directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick and producers Greg Hale and Michael Monello, plus we get a the Theatrical Cut , transferred from the 35mm transfer master which is much closer to what we saw at theaters and on disc previous to this release. It's quite an upgrade, the 16mm footage looks properly grainy and well-textured, it's a bit brighter as well, and the get the Hi-8 video footage is now scanned from the source for the first time on home video in the proper frame rate, which gives it an authentically raw appearance. Theatrically and in all previous home video versions the Hi- footage has been shown at the incorrect 24 fps. We also get the Theatrical cut from the original 35mm master, which is interesting for the sake of comparison, but I do not ever see myself going back to that version, but I love that it is here for the sake of completion.

Audio on all three versions comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 2.0 stereo with optional English subtitles. It's a pretty straight forward track, don't expect a super immersive experience, keeping it true to the found footage aesthetic, but there are still some creepy moments to be found in the sound designs, frightening sounds emanating darkened woods, what sounds like rocks being smashed together, broken branches, and of course the harrowing screams inside a dilapidated old house, it's plenty terrifying.

It should be noted that prior to reviewing the disc Second Sight have announced  a disc replacement program for this release in which buyers can e-mail blair@secondsightfilms.co.uk with the subject line of "Blair Witch replacement disc" along with a proof of purchase to receive their replacement, as it seems that the Theatrical Cut was authored with an channel mapping error that presents what should be a stereo track as dual-mono.

Onto the extras, this is a loaded edition for sure, and one sure to please longtime fans and newcomers. We start off with a brand new Audio Commentary by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Josh Nelson for the restored Theatrical Cut, plus the archival Directors' and Producers' Audio Commentary, also for the Theatrical cut.
More new stuff comes by way of the massive nearly three-hour The Blair Witch Documentary, a new feature-length Second Sight Films production that runs 150 minutes, it includes co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, producer Greg Hale, production designer Ben Rock, and co-producer Michael Monello. It's a no stone left unturned look at the making of the film from creating the mythology, scouting locations, footage of pre-production meetings around the kitchen table, and plenty of previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage. This is an essential piece for deep-diving fans of the flick. We also get 82-min of Deleted Scenes, including previously unseen video and 16mm footage that has also been restored and looks terrific.
Up next is the 11-min The Blair Witch Project: Analogue Horror in a Digital World by Mike Muncer, a video essay which gets into how this film helped establish found footage as a viable medium that was often imitated but never duplicated.

Also included is the 44-min Curse of the Blair Witch, a mockumentary broadcast on the Syfy Channel in 1999 before the release of the film that purported to tell the backstory of the Blair Witch mythology.  Then onto 8-min of Alternate Endings; a 11-min Cannes 1999: Archive Directors’ Interview with co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, and a pair of Trailers top it all off.

The 2-disc Blu-ray set arrives in a sturdy Rigid Slipcase with new spooky into-the-woods artwork by artist Timothy Pittides, inside the 2-discs are housed in a gatefold digipak with clear plastic trays featuring it's own unique artwork. Also tucked away inside the slipbox is a truly hefty 184-Page Hardcover Book featuring unique artwork by artist Timothy Pittides, filled with archive production materials, director's notes, cast and crew credits, and absolutely stuffed with essays by Stacey Abbott, Becky Darke, Adam Hart, Craig Ian Mann, Mary Beth McAndrews, Dr. Cecilia Sayad, Peter Turner and Heather Wixson. We also get a second book, a 40-page replica of Heather's Journal Book, square bound and filled with her musing which grow darker as the entries progress, which is such a cool addition. Additionally, we get Three Collectors' Art Cards featuring the artwork of the Slipbox and Book by Timothy Pittides and an image from the film.
This is a truly gorgeous packaged set, even by the usual high standard of Second Sight Films this Limited Edition set with it's stark black and white design is a true spooky-looking beauty. It's too bad about the audio error, but I am pleased to see Second Sight Films address it and remedy it with a disc replacement program in a timely manner.

AMERICAN MOVIE (1999) (SPHE 4K Ultra HD Review)

AMERICAN MOVIE (1999)

Label: SPHE
Region Code: Region-Free
Rating: R
Duration: 104 Minutes 42 Seconds
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Stereo with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 2160p Ultra HD Fullscreen (1.33:1)
Director:
Cast: Mark Borchardt, Mike Schank, Matt Weisman

The 1999 doc American Movie follows the no-budget movie-making exploits of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin denizen Mark Borchardt, who is obsessed with making a movie. At the top of the doc he's trying to get a film called "Northwestern" rolling, but after several just a few production meetings into it he realizes that he just doesn't have the resources to make it, so he switches gears, throwing his passion into making a horror film called "Coven", which he hilariously mispronounces with a long "o" sound, a film he started making in 1994.

This guy is totally movie obsessed, and his enthusiasm is quite infectious, to both us and those around him, but he's also an alcoholic newspaper delivery guy with massive debt, few resources, and a taste for booze, which when combined with his movie-making passion makes for one of the most entertaining docs of all-time. He has an indominable DIY spirit, but he also has few to little resources in which to make those aspiration come true, and seeing him trying scrape together this indie horror flick with myriad setbacks and stumbles, is both a testament to his passion for film, but also to just how misguided he is, and completely unable to see he's in over-his0head, which is also his greatest strength. When I first saw this I was convinced it was a mockumentary, something along the lines of Christopher Guest's For Your Consideration, but no, this is real, and it's just bonkers and totally entertaining from start to finish, and surprisingly heart-warming as well.

I love the scene of Mark going through his mail and is opening bills, lamenting that he owes taxes, his phone bill is overdue, and he's broke, he owes child support, but then he gets a credit card in the mail and says "Oh God, kick-fucking-ass, I got a Master Card. I don't believe it, man. Life is kind of cool sometimes."; but my favorite line is when they are do line reading with the local actors and he complains to his best pal Mike that "They're making a mockery of my words, man. This whole thing is turning out to be a theatrical mockery. You understand that, Mike?", then proceeds to give his own line reading which is over-the-top and pretty terrible. I thought his kind-hearted pal Mike is sort of the heart and soul of the film, a former alcoholic and drug addict on the road to recovery but who is clearly a casualty of a partying life-style, he's off the drugs and booze but now he's addicted to scratch-off lottery tickets, reasoning that "when you play the lottery, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose... but it's better than using drugs or alcohol, because when you use drugs and alcohol, especially drugs, you always lose". Hard to argue with that logic to a degree, I guess, but he's a standup friend for sure who more than anyone else goes above and beyond to help his pal Mark out in any capacity he can to make this dang movie.

Then there's Mark's own family who are helping him out, including his Swedish-born mother who struggles to operate the 16mm camera for him during one of his own scenes, his somewhat mysterious father, and then there's his elderly Uncle Bill, who loans him $3,000 with Mark's guarantee that once the film is made he can sell 3,000 copies of the it on VHS for $14.95 a pop and repay him. That Uncle Bill seems like he's in some state of dementia adds an element of unsavoriness to the proceedings, but also quite a bit of entertainment as Mark plies him with alcohol, and later tries in van to get him to utter some ADR from the passenger seat of his car,

It's a wild fly-on-the-wall doc that is a love-letter to the independent spirit of Mark Brouchard and independent filmmaking, in ways it sort of feels like a mockumentary crossed with a weird fly-on-the-wall feel of something like Gummo, and every time I watch I am utterly fascinated by Brouchard and the cast of characters that orbit around him while trying to make this horror flick.

Audio/Video: American Movie (1999) surprisingly arrives on 4K Ultra HD framed in 1.33:1 fullscreen from Sony, the documentary footage was shot on 16mm and it looks authentic to it's low-budget 16mm roots, meaning it's plenty grain, but it also has nice texture and detail. Colors looks solid, the Dolby Vision (HDR) color-grade offers well-saturated primaries, but it's not exactly the sort of film that really needs DV/HDR either.  The biggest benefit of the WGC spectrum is deeper blacks which help with contrast as well.

Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 2.0 stereo with optional English subtitles. It's a doc, so it's dialogue heavy and the track is solid, everything sounded clean and accurate to the original sound production.

Extras carried over from the previous Blu-ray edition include the Director and Cast Audio Commentary featuring Director Chris Smith, producer Sarah Price, Mark Borchardt, and Mike Shank; 37-minutes of Deleted Scenes; and the 3-min Theatrical Trailer. Something not present on the previous Blu-ray that turns up here is pretty exciting, we get the 26-min "Coven" Short Film by Mark Borchardt! This probably makes this worth the double-dip for fans like myself who probably wouldn't normally upgrade a doc from Blu-ray to 4K Ultra HD, but for me I think it's worth it to own the flick the doc is about!

The single-disc release arrives housed in a black keepcase with a single-sided wrap featuring the theatrical artwork, which is replicated on the Slipcover, which I would imagine is limited to the first-pressing only.

Special Features:
- "Coven" Short Film by Mark Borchardt (36:20)
- Director and Cast Audio Commentary
- Deleted Scenes (36:56)
- Theatrical Trailer (2:44)

THE WALKING DEAD (1936) (Warner Archive Blu-ray Review)

THE WALKING DEAD (1936)

Label: Warner Archive
Region Code: Region-Free
Rating; Unrated
Duration: 66 Minutes 6 Seconds
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Dual-Mono with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Fullscreen (1.37:1)
Director: Michael Curtiz
Cast: Boris Karloff, Ricardo Cortez, Edmund Gwenn

In the Michael Curtiz (Doctor X) directed gangster-thriller The Walking Dead (1936) Boris Karloff (The Invisible Ray) stars as musician John Elman, who has just gotten out of jail after a stint for manslaughter, having accidentally killing a man after punching him too hard during an altercation. Having served his sentence he's finding it hard to find a job, until he meets the shady Trigger Smith (Joseph Sawyer, It Came from Outer Space) who hires him to keep tabs on Judge Roger Shaw (Joseph King, Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum), the same judge who sentenced Elman to prison year earlier, supposedly because he's a philanderer and he;s being investigated, but Elman is unaware that Trigger is a hitman for the local mafia who have it out for the judge, and he's being set-up as a patsy for the judge's murder. Sure enough the mob kill the judge and dump his body in Elman's car, and not surprisingly given his history with the judge, he's railroaded during a court trial and sentenced tot he electric chair for the murder he did not commit. The wrinkle is that a young couple, Nancy (Marguerite Churchill, Dracula's Daughter) and Jimmy (Warren Hull, Night Key), witness the gangsters dumping the body in the car and know that Elman is innocent, but are too scared to come forth after being threatened by the gangsters. They do make a 11th hour attempt to come forward with information to clear his name on the night of his execution, but it's too late to save Elman. Realizing their mistake after the fact officials allow Dr. Evan Beaumont (Edmund Gwenn, Them!) to take possession of the corpse and he uses an experimental mechanical heart to revive Elman, who is miraculously resurrected but seemingly has no memory of his life before the execution. The experience has changed him, leaving him partially crippled with a white streak through his hair, but stars to sense and understand that it was the local crime syndicate that set him up, those being Loder (Barton MacLane, Cry of the Werewolf), Blackstone (Paul Harvey, Waterfront at Midnight), and Merritt (Robert Strange, The Mad Monster). He sets about visiting them one at a time, confronting them about why they killed him, and strangely they each die, not by his hand directly but by their own actions, fueled by the guilt of their actions and fear, which leads to them shooting themselves, getting hit by a train, falling out a window and dying a horrific car accident.

It's a solid thriller, basically a gangster revenger with some chilling semi supernatural elements, stylishly directed by Curtiz with his usual visual flourishes, moody sets steeped in shadow, plenty of atmosphere, and the action is well-staged including a finale car chase and wreck, plus a couple of terrific looking sequences in a rainy cemetery.

Karloff gives a strong and rather haunted performance, at times I was getting a definite Frankenstein vibe from the performance, and of course his look with that white streak certainly brought to mind Elsa Lanchester from The Bride of Frankenstein from the year before. At just 66-minutes this one flies by with a brisk pace, it's well-crafted, and the action is quite enjoyable and there are some chilling moments as well. While I was watching it I was also getting vibes of Dead and Buried (1981) with Karloff's character as someone who should be dead, and seems to realize that towards the end.

Audio/Video: The Walking Dead (1936) arrives on Blu-ray from Warner Archive with a restoration sourced from a new 4K scan of the original nitrate camera negative, presented in the original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The source looks immaculate, loving restored and cleaned-up, it's also quite filmic looking with a lush layer of natural film grain throughout. Grayscale and contrast look nicely dueled in, there's some inherent softness that creeps in occasionally and blacks are not quite inky black, but regardless, this is a phenomenal looking presentation. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 2.0 dual-mono with optional English subtitles. There's some light hiss and crackle present on the track but all things considered, a solid track, and the score by Bernhard Kaun (Frankenstein) sounds great.

Warner Archive's disc features a new Audio Commentary by Film Historian and Author Alan K Rode, which I appreciated as Warner Archive Blu-ray rarely feature new bonus content. We also get a wealth of archival materials by way of an Audio Commentary by Film Historian Greg Mank; the 37-min documentary Michael Curtiz: The Greatest Director You've Never Heard Of featuring input from Ben Burtt, Steven Spielberg, William Friedkin, Rudy Belhmer, George Stevens, Jr., and Alan K. Rode. This one is not new and has previously been issued on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD edition of Curtiz' Casablanca; plus we ger a pair of classic Friz Freleng produced cartoons, both from '36, by way of the 8-min The Cat Came Back and the 8-min Let It Be Me; plus the Original Theatrical Trailer. The single-disc release arrives in a standard keepcase with a single-sided wrap featuring what looks to be an theatrical poster artwork.

Robert Kerman (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST), Janet Agren (CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD), Ivan Rassimov (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK), Paola Senatore (EMANUELLE IN AMERICA), Me Me Lai (LAST CANNIBAL WORLD) and Mel Ferrer (THE GREAT ALLIGATOR) star in this “grisly greatest hits package” (Mondo Digital) scanned in 4K from the CRI with over 4 hours of Special Features that include a newly discovered discussion of cannibal films between Umberto Lenzi and Ruggero Deodato.

RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR

Having depicted the zombie apocalypse in HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD, director Bruno Mattei and screenwriters Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi took on a new kind of cataclysm to create “a grotesque, funny and thrilling magnum opus” (Daily Dead) that still must be seen to be believed, especially in UHD: In the year 225 A.B. (After The Bomb), a gang of scavengers discovers a seemingly abandoned city – including sets originally built for ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA – only to become prey for millions of flesh-hungry rats. Ottaviano Dell’Acqua (ZOMBIE 3), Massimo Vanni (ROBOWAR), Gianni Franco (THE WAX MASK) and Geretta Geretta (DEMONS) star – with a classic ‘80s Italian horror score by Luigi Ceccarelli (NOSFERATU IN VENICE) – in “Bruno Mattei’s masterpiece” (Senseless Cinema), now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative for the first time ever, with 3 hours of new & archival Special Features and a Bonus CD of the recently discovered/remastered soundtrack.

SLAVE OF THE CANNIBAL GOD

After creating some of the best gialli of the ‘70s, director Sergio Martino (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) entered the cannibal cycle with this “blood and guts gorefest” (Trailers From Hell) that “still packs a punch” (Rock! Shock! Pop!) and is presented in UHD for the first time ever: When a British scientist disappears in the jungles of New Guinea, his wife (Ursula Andress) hires an American anthropologist (Stacy Keach) to lead her deep into a green inferno of graphic violence, steamy nudity and several of the most notorious scenes in the entire genre. Claudio Cassinelli (THE GREAT ALLIGATOR) co-stars in what Daily Grindhouse hails as “ROMANCING THE STONE for deviants,” now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative with over 3 hours of Special Features that include a new interview with Martino.

HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD

What began as the epic global zombie apocalypse screenplay VIRUS by Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi (SHOCKING DARK, ROBOWAR) became – via the inimitable vision of director Bruno Mattei (CRUEL JAWS, RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR) and a fraction of the original budget – this “gloriously ludicrous” (Confluence of Cult), “compulsively watchable” (Classic-Horror), “infamous zombie-chomp spectacular” (Braineater), now in UHD for the first time in America: When a top-secret biomedical project accidentally unleashes a catastrophic plague, a four-man commando team and a female reporter head into the jungle for an “absolutely insane” (B&S About Movies) experience in gratuitous nudity, grisly stock footage and ravenous hordes of flesh-eating zombies. Margie Newton (THE ADVENTURES OF HERCULES), Franco Garofalo (THE OTHER HELL) and a soundtrack ‘borrowed’ from Goblin star in “a must for all fans of Italian exploitation” (Cinezilla) – also known as VIRUS, NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES and ZOMBIE CREEPING FLESH – now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative.

LAST CANNIBAL WORLD

For the first film in his unofficial ‘Cannibal Trilogy,’ director Ruggero Deodato (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK) delivered a depraved adventure that’s been called “well made and meaty” (Malevolent Dark), “gripping and shocking” (Monster Hunter) and “easily the most savage of the entire genre” (Fantastic Movie Musings), presented in UHD for the first time ever in North America: In a jungle hell that has no pity for man, the survivors of a plane crash are hunted by a primitive tribe with a taste for torment. Massimo Foschi (NINE GUESTS FOR A CRIME), Ivan Rassimov (SACRIFICE!) and Me Me Lai (EATEN ALIVE) star in this ultra-graphic gut-muncher – also known as JUNGLE HOLOCAUST, THE LAST SURVIVOR and CANNIBAL – “that raised the bar in terms of extreme gore and nastiness” (The Worldwide Celluloid Massacre), now scanned in 4K from the original negative with over 2½ hours of Special Features and a webstore exclusive Blu-ray disc containing the Alternate U.S. Version of the film.

THONG GIRLS

This 1983 production from writer/director Jess Franco can finally be experienced as one of his most surprising and heartfelt offerings of the decade: It’s summer’s end in the resort city of Benidorm, where seductive foreigners, conniving hustlers, gullible tourists and insatiable celebrities all come together in a barbed confection that’s part sunny comedy, part NASHVILLE-style satire and totally, unmistakably, sexy Franco fun. Jess’ partner/muse Lina Romay (at her most luscious) and production manager/star Antonio Mayans (NIGHT OF OPEN SEX) are joined by a cast of familiar faces from their ‘80s stock company – including Eva León (MANSION OF THE LIVING DEAD), Muriel Montossé (THE INCONFESSABLE ORGIES OF EMMANUELLE), Juan Soler (CRIES OF PLEASURE) and Analía Ivars (BAHIA BLANCA) – in this unexpected delight from “one of the cinema's great individualists” (The Guardian), now scanned in 2K from the original camera negative with over 2 hours of new Special Features.

THONG GIRLS Special Features:

NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS

For far too long, this 1974 shocker directed by Aldo Lado (WHO SAW HER DIE?) has been dismissed as a LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT knockoff. Now it can be experienced as a classic “more intense and disturbing than the film that inspired it” (DVD Talk) in UHD for the first time ever: When two young girls taking a train home for the holidays encounter a pair of sadistic thugs, it will trigger a nightmare of sexual brutality and parental revenge. Flavio Bucci (SUSPIRIA), Irene Miracle (INFERNO), Macha Méril (DEEP RED) and Enrico Maria Salerno (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE) star – with a powerful soundtrack by Ennio Morricone – in this “damn fine film that stands on its own merits” (Screen Anarchy) – also known as LAST STOP ON THE NIGHT TRAIN, THE NEW HOUSE ON THE LEFT, SECOND HOUSE ON THE LEFT, DON’T RIDE ON LATE NIGHT TRAINS, LAST HOUSE PART II and XMAS MASSACRE – scanned in 4K from the original camera negative with over 5 hours of Special Features.

ANTIVIRAL

The award-winning debut feature by writer/director Brandon Cronenberg has been called “wild and creepy” (JoBlo), “smart and subversive” (Empire) and “hallucinatory body horror from the same plasma pool as VIDEODROME” (ScreenCrush). Now it can be experienced in UHD for the first time ever: Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones of Twin Peaks: The Return and GET OUT) is a top sales representative for The Lucas Clinic, which harvests exclusive infections from celebrities for injection into obsessed fans. But in a near future consumed by the possibilities of biological communion, will Syd himself pay a horrific price for the toxicity of fame? Sarah Gadon (COSMOPOLIS) and Malcolm McDowell co-star in this “new perversity from a new Cronenberg” (Salon), scanned in 4K from the 35mm protection internegative supervised by Brandon Cronenberg and cinematographer Karim Hussain (INFINITY POOL) with 3 hours of new and archival Special Features.

THE MASK OF SATAN

From writer/director Lamberto Bava (DEMONS) comes a modern-day reimagining of his father’s classic BLACK SUNDAY featuring FX by Sergio Stivaletti (CEMETERY MAN), music by Simon Boswell (SANTA SANGRE) and hailed as “an impressive evolution of ‘80s Italian horror that not enough fans have seen” (At The Mansion Of Madness): When a group of skiers becomes trapped in a crevasse, their discovery of a long-frozen female corpse will unmask an ancient evil, unlock a portal of the damned and unleash a nightmare of Satanic vengeance. Mary Sellers (STAGEFRIGHT), Debora Caprioglio (Klaus Kinski’s PAGANINI) and Michele Soavi (director of THE CHURCH and THE SECT) star in this “visual roller coaster” (Ninja Dixon) – also known as DEMONS 5: THE DEVIL’S VEIL – now scanned in 2K from the original camera negative for the first time ever in North America.

What are you afraid of? It's only rock 'n' roll!

From the early days of DVD, one movie more than any other has been requested by horror fans and metal heads all over: Charles Martin Smith’s heavy metal horror classic TRICK OR TREAT. A box office disappointment that found a wide following on home video and cable in the 80s and 90s, it’s been curiously out of reach to fans, who would rely on dubious DVDs and imports to get their Halloween heavy horror treat. Now, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films are finally bringing the much-anticipated TRICK OR TREAT to your door in definitive 4K UHD and Blu-ray releases that will make every day Halloween for horror fanatics and headbangers!

Rock ‘n’ roll will never die, in this 1980s cult favorite that stars Marc Price (Family Ties) as Eddie Weinbauer, a teenage outcast who idolizes Sammi Curr (Tony Fields), a heavy metal superstar. After Sammi dies a violent death, his spirit returns to help Eddie get even with his high school tormentors. In doing so, Sammi begins to gain control over Eddie’s life and brings him deeper into the world of the occult. When Eddie realizes that he has become the tool of Sammi’s vengeance, he attempts to stop him, and the horrifying events that follow leave no one unscathed.

Featuring special appearances by Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne, TRICK OR TREAT marked the directorial debut of veteran actor Charles Martin Smith (The Untouchables; Starman) and features a legendary soundtrack by Fastway. Red Shirt Home Video and Synapse Films are proud to present this heavy metal horror classic in an all-new 4K restoration presented in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) and loaded with hours of supplemental material including multiple commentary tracks and a feature-length video retrospective. So, have a look-see and hopefully you get some ideas of what to get your cinema loving friends and family, but don't forget to treat yourself, too! This is a list that caters to my own personal preferences of cult-classics, paranoid sci-fi, and vintage horror, and I tried to spice it up with some cool television.
