Severin's latest box set odyssey is the 24-film, 15-disc Blu-ray + CD set The Sensual World of Black Emanuelle, a massive compendium of softcore sex film starring the exquisite Indonesian actress Laura Gemser, most frequently in collaboration with writer/director Joe D’Amato, as well as Bruno Mattei and others. This set is an astonishing tribute to Black Emanuelle with largely new scans of the films, as well as over 40 hours of deep-diving extras that include alternate versions, audio commentaries, video essays, a documentary on Gemser’s husband/co-star Gabriele Tinti, the ‘80s Gemser workout video Looking Good, and loads more, including 2 CD of rare soundtrack music from the flicks.

Italian schlock-maker Bruno Mattei filmed this WIP flick back-to-back with Women's Prison Massacre (1983) with both films starring Indonesian sex-kitten Laura Gemser as Emanuelle, this time going undercover as a whore to uncover a corrupt prison's human rights abuses for Amnesty International - you have to admire the lengths to which she will go for a story! Also appearing is Lorraine De Selle (House On The Edge of the Park) as the thoroughly wicked warden and Franca Stoppi (Beyond The Darkness) as a wonderfully sadistic lesbian guard, both of who get their rocks off while watching lady inmates get it on with each other. We also get Gemser's husband Gabriele Tinti (Cut and Run) as a surprisingly sympathetic prison doctor; I kept waiting for him to turn rape-y at some point, and while that doesn't happen his character does have a dark wife-murdering past. Also making appearances in the film are Ursula Flores and Antonella Giacomini as female inmates, plus we get notable turns from Leila Durante as Pilar, an older female inmate with a pet cockroach, and Franco Caracciolo as effeminate male prisoner Leander who is locked-up at the adjoining male prison, a character who seems to only be there as a recurring male-on-male rape joke, the character sounding a bit like Ed Wynn (the voice of the Mad Hatter from Disney's Alice In Wonderland).
The film has the requisite amount of brutality and sleazy WIP tropes, but the graphic rape stuff is largely absent which is fine by me. Once it is revealed that Gemser's character is an undercover reporter looking to blow the lid of the corruption at the facility she suffers tortures such as red-eyed rodents, a bell-ringing, drugging, and the unwanted molestation at the hands of a corrupt prison official (Jacques Stany, Four Flies On Grey Velvet). All the while though she's been plotting with the sympathetic prison doc to make a daring escape, which allows for her to have sex with him several times throughout the film, of course. Fans of prison exploitation should find plenty to delight in, there's loads of girl-on-girl brawling and sex, plus some a surprising turd-wrestling scene when Emanuelle and two guards fall onto the floor during a scuffle and end up wresting in some human feces, so it's got that going for it as well.
Audio/Video: Violence In A Women's Prison (1982) arrives on Blu-ray from Severin Films sourced from what is advertised as a newly prepared 2K scan for this collection, sharing a disc with Emanuelle In Prison. The flick is presented here in 1080p HD framed in 1.78:1 widescreen, looking pretty terrific, colors look reasonably strong and grain is well-managed if a bit course during the darker scenes, and fine detail is pleasing. Audio options include either English or Italian DTS-HD MA 2.0 dual mono with optional English subtitles, both sound just fine, dialogue is never hard to discern and the Luigi Ceccarelli (Rats: Nights of Terror) score sounds good.
Onto the special features we get all the extras from the previous 2018 Severin Blu-ray, these include the Freak-O-Rama produced Brawl in Women's Block featuring co-director/co-writers Claudio Fragasso (Troll 2) and Rossella Drudi - each discussing how they came to be in the movie business, working with Bruno Mattei and shooting this film and Women's Prison Massacre back-to-back over a five week period and the challenges that provided. We also get a 3-min Archival Interview from director Bruno Mattei , and a 31-sec Radio Spot and a Trailer for the film. New to this set is the 12-min Two For One – Interview With Producer Roberto Di Girolamo, wherein he discusses his work with Mattei.
This gorgeous set arrives with a sturdy Rigid Slipcase with a super-cool and quite naughty view-finder type feature that is just awesome, very creative the folks over there at Severin. Inside is the DigiBook Packaging that houses the 15-discs (13 Blu-ray, 2 CD) that slip into the pocket sleeves. Each of the heavy cardstock pages features loads of eye-popping Gemser images, as do the discs themselves which feature the same key artwork as the pages, Also tucked away inside is the incredibly dense 356-page The Black Emanuelle Bible: Designed by Luke Insect with a cover illustration by Kim Thompson, and edited by Kier-La Janisse. This fully illustrated book is easily the most in-depth and all-encompassing compendium of essays, reviews and archival interviews ever put to print about the Black Emanuel series. it's freaking huge! So much so that I have chosen to just read about each film as I review them, one by one, for fear of being burned out - this is a huge chunk or movie-watching and reading time to take in all at once. We get new writings on the film from Kevin John Bozelka, Costas Constandinides, Rachel Harrison, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Kier-La Janisse, Jennifer Moorman, Xavier Aldana Reyes, Jorge Rivera-Gutiérrez and Erin Wiegand; plus additional capsule reviews by Bryan Connolly and Craig Ledbetter; and archival interviews with actress Laura Gemser and screenwriter Maria Pia Fusco.
