The intergalactic adventure of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty continue for a wild seventh season, this being the first season without the voice talents of series co-creator
Justin Roiland who voiced the titular Rick and Morty, but who was let go from the show following some unsavory allegations both behind-the-scenes and at home, a move which begged the question, how will that effect the show? Well, fear not, in his place this season and presumably going forward we have the voice talents of Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden capably filling the void. I was hard pressed to detect a big difference here in the voice acting of the titular characters, which made the transition practically seamless.

Rick and Morty's misadventures continue with 10 more batshit episodes that are sure to please both the long time fans and newcomers alike, continuing the show's long-running deconstruction of genre tropes, skewering pop-culture, reveling in bad taste, fun visual gags and offering a general sense of anything goes, but always with a level of depth still catches me by surprise at times. The first episode starts off with the alcoholic Mr. Poopybutthole who is uncomfortably living with the Smiths while trying to reunite with his ex, only to discover that she is now dating Gul'karna, the Predator-alien private investigator Poopybutthoel hired to keep an eye on her; oh, and Hugh Jackmen plays a large part in this episode as well. Later exploits feature Rick and Jerry both dying only to be reanimated by Rick's medical robot which causes them to share brains, creating a duo they dub Burger & Fries, before transforming into "Jerricky", plus we get a mid-season highlight with Rick and Morty catching up to Rick's arch-nemesis Rick Prime finally, whom they bloodily defeat with the help of Evil-Morty. In "Wet Kuat Amortican Summer" Summer and Morty are transformed into a becomes a "Kuato" (you know, like from Total Recall) after abusing a "attribute slider" technology, and then Morty storm Rick can enter Valhalla to ensure Rick's afterlife, which involves battling Bigfoot and defeating the Pope with a Poké Ball. It gets even weirder with the food-ethics episode about suicide-spaghetti, and the season finale featuring Morty conquering his fears by facing the "fear hole" in Denny's bathroom,

The writing this season is quite strong, though some of the edgier gross-out humor seems to be a tad toned down this season, but it's a still a wicked wild ride from start to finish, chock full of irreverent humor, stuffed with pop culture Easter Eggs, and a still surprising amount of character depth. This should come as no surprise but I love season seven of the show, and happily it's been renewed for an eight season which is set to air in early 2024.

Audio/Video: Season Seven of Rick and Morty gets a Blu-ray from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment in 1080p HD widescreen framed in 1.78:1 widescreen. The invective and often outrageous animation looks terrific with bold, vividly rendered colors that pop and strong line detail. The fine detail looks great as well, some of the scenes are densely layered with cool little peccadillos I found myself re-watching certain scenes just to check out all the cool little nuggets tuc ked away in the frame. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 5.1 with optional English subtitles. The track as with most of the seasons it quite immersive with plenty of cool use of the surrounds during the sci-fi action scenes that is always pleasing to my ears.

Extras on this season include 21-minutes of Inside the Episodes, the 3-min Directing Unmortricken with Jacob Hair talking about the making of the gonzo batshit  "Unmortricken" episode, 3-min of The Characters of Season 7 which gets into how the character design team set about creating season 7's impressive new characters, and the 8-min Inside Season 7 further explores the seasons twists and turns.
