That;s right, Tenacious D, The Greatest Band in the World, Tenacious D, proudly announces the release of the latest have released the third entry in their Complete Masterworks series, The Complete Masterworks Vol. 3! Rejoice! I remember first seeing Tenacious D probably for the first time on TV in '98 or '99. it was either on SNL where they showed up on a Weekend Update Segment or when they appeared on the short-lived Late Night with Craig Kilborn, I now they has an HBO series that in '97, but I don't think I actually ever saw it till that was released on first The Complete Masterworks DVD release in 2002, by which time I was already deeply enamored with the band via their debut album in 2000, bolstered by my wonderful Canyon Cafe coffee shop co-worker Angela who would inappropriately sing the D's "Fuck Her Gently" non-stop for a period of time at work, which was endearing. Then there was the Tenacious D and The Pick of Destiny movie which I saw twice at the theatre, which probably accounted for half the ticket sales in our vicinity, and of course the accompanying soundtrack album which I would listen to a but too much, usually while my young kids where in the car, and they could sing along with me, especially on tracks like the opener "Kickapoo", "The Metal", "Master Exploder" and of course "Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown)", which is a family favorite to this day!
This set features the band's O2 Arena concert in London from their 2023 Spicy Meatball Tour, the animated film Post Apocalypto, plus a handful of music videos. The concert footage features the band in fine form, we have JB and KG of course on acoustic guitar and vocals, backed by John Konesky (Trainwreck) on electric guitar, John Spiker on bass guitar, Scott Seiver on drums and special appearances by 'Biffy Pyro', the pyrotechnics guy. They perform fav-favorites from the Tenacious D, The Pick of Destiny, Rize of the Fenix album, kicking off with a rendition of "Kickapoo" with KF taking on the Meatloaf verses and JB tackling the Dio verses, and it gets the crowd cheering big-time. Throughout the show the band not only sounds great but have the crowd eating it up with witty banter and the band's Iron Maiden/Eddie -esque towering mascot showing up during "The Metal", with guitarist John Konesky handling the Dave Groh,/Satan vocals on "Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown)" and hitting the high notes on "Master Exploder".
Also included is the 66-min Post Apocalypto animated film that aired is segments on YouTube, with music from The D and illustrations by Jack Black. I'll be honest, I am not a huge fan of this one, and it all boils down tot he fact that it's not really animation, it's a slideshow of illustrations by Jack Black, and while the voice acting is fun and the post-apocalyptic storyline is fun that animation hurdle proved too much for me.
Th rest of the package features music videos, including the cover of Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" from Kung Fu Panda 4, with fun footage of KG and JB hanging at the film;s red carpet premier with the lies of Dustin Hoffman, Bryan Cranston, Awkwafina, Ke Huy Quan, and James Hong. We also get a cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", the animated"Video Games", a commercial for the band's Fiber d'Lish , and their charity covers series including "Tenacious D's The Who Medley," The Beatles' "You Never Give Me Your Money / The End," and "Time Warp," from the The Rocky Horror Show.
Audio/Video: The Blu-ray presents the film in 1080p (concert/videos) and 1080i (animated film) HD, framed in 1.78:1 widescreen. Audio comes by way of English PCM 2.0 stereo with no subtitles.
The 2-disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo arrives in a dual-hubbed black keepcase with a single-sided sleeve of artwork, inside there's an Insert Card, Fold-Out Poster and we get a Slipcover with the same artwork as the wrap.
