In the uneasy Spanish apocalypse-thriller Everyone Will Burn (2021) depressed divorcee
Maria Jose (Maraena Gómez, Dagonhas lost her own child to suicide some years earlier, she now prepares to end of her life, but her leap from a bridge into the local river is interrupted by the arrival of a strange mud-covered girl named Lucia (Sofía García) with dwarfism who claims that Maria is her mother. Maria believes the child is lost and confused and gathers her into her car to take her to the Civil Guard headquarters, but the Civil Guard pull her over en route, and after a bit of confusion over the child's parentage the stop turns into a shocking display of Lucia's mysterious supernatural powers as she mind-control/pushes one of the cops to murder the other and then causes the other to burst into flames.

Startled and seemingly a bit confused herself Maria takes Lucia to her home and we learn of her son's suicide, which she blames on Toti (Guillermo Estrella), the son of the village's Mayor (Fernando Cayo), and how she has since been divorced  by her husband David (Rodolfo Sancho, The Orphanage) and has been quite lonely, wracked by guilt and grief, and looked upon with scorn by the locals. The villagers begi to take notice of Lucia as well, and soon there's talk of a apocalyptic prophecy that was thought fulfilled forty years earlier when the villagers killed what they believed to be a demon-child that was spreading plague and deaths. The local priest Padre Abelino (Germán Torres) notes the bizarre and shocking deaths that happen around Maria and Lucia, and he also believes that the prophecy of the demon-child has returned, and that perhaps it's Maria Jose herself who has summoned the evil to return through her grief, to perhaps have her revenge on those she blames for her son's death and on those who have persecuted her ever since, with Lucia proving herself to be a Damien/Carrie type figure with telekinetic powers.

As the film moves along we discover how corrupt the local community leaders are, sin is everywhere and no one is innocent, but all have been quite happy to ostracize Maria, and it's all coming to a violent and bloody head now with the new threat of an apocalyptic prophecy. Chock full of stylish lensing, and a well-executed sense of unease and dread that carries through the the fevered finale this is quite a shocking little gem, that is sneakily black-humored as well. Both Gómez and Garcia are terrific in the flick, with the former having a manic intensity that she brings to many of her roles that I adore, and Garcia in her first film role is mesmerizing as the mysterious demon-child.

The small-town religious supernatural vibe of this one brought to mind the Spanish-language HBO series 30 Coins, which also happens to feature star Maraena Gómez. It really scratched that itch I have for dark-hearted, black humored horror, recommended.

Audio/Video: Everyone Will Burn (2921) arrives on MOD Blu-ray from Drafthouse Films in 1080p HD widescreen framed in 2.35:1. It generally looks quite nice having been shot digital with warm suffused colors that are pleasing to the eye. I did notice a bit of black crush in a couple of the darker scenes, but overall a keen presentation with excellent texture and detail in the close-ups. Audio comes by way of Spanish DTS-HD MA 2.0 stereo with optional English subtitles, dialogue, sound effects and score all sound great, no complaints.

The MOD Blu-ray disc arrives in a standard keepcase with a single-sided sleeve of artwork. Inside the manufactured-on-demand non-pressed disc is seated on the hub. Sadly the only extra on the disc is a Trailer, nothing else,.
