Half Baked: Totally High (2023) is a 25-year later sequel to the Half Baked (1998), passing the doobie to the next Thurgood's estranged 20-something son JR and his group of friends. Ever since they first shared a joint as kids in the school bathroom 10 years ago, Thurgood's son JR (Dexter Darden, The Maze Runner), Miles (Moses Storm, Unfriended), Cori (Ramona Young, Santa Clarita Diet) and Bruce (Joel Courtney, Super 8) have been best buds. As adult when Bruce attempts to puff on a fabled doobie containing three strains of weed that turns out to be fatal and he dies. Now strapped for cash to send Bruce's body across the country for a proper burial, the three remaining stoners scramble to raise the funds, and when JR comes across an amazing strain of marijuana known as "Biblical" while working at the post office, which he steals and they begin selling it on the streets, branding it as "Heavenly High" and making money hand over fist. However, the owner of a legal weed-store (David Koechner, Waiting...) and ruthless underground drug lord with bad-breath named Shadow (Justin Miles, Old Dads) are none too pleased by the group's weed-peddling endeavor and come down hard on the crew.

The only folks returning from the original Half Baked are are Harland Williams (Rocket Man) who shows up briefly as a weed-smoking gym teacher, and Rachel True (The Craft) who returns as Mary Jane Potman, Thurgood's girlfriend in the first film and JR's mother, who still hates weed. there's no Dave Chappelle as Thurgood Jenkins, Jim Breuer or Guillermo Díaz in sight, though there's quite a bit of talk about Thurgood and what's become of him. The stoner plot line is pretty silly and didn't always engage me, but I am not a huge fan of the first film truth be told. That said, I laughed, there are moments, and the group have a decent stoner chemistry, plus I always love seeing  Koechner in blow-hard mode, and we get a fun appearance from Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz as a version of himself which si fun. There's also a  fun subplot involving the deadly three weed strain that can only me smoked by the "chosen one", which results in a psychedelic trip to weed-heaven and JR acquiring superhuman abilities like a weed-powered Black Lightning.  Totally ridiculous, half-baked but not half bad either.
