COLT 45 - THE COMPLETE SERIES (1957-1959)

Label: Warner Archive
Region Code: A
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 1875 Minutes

Video: 1080p HD (1.33:1)
Cast: Wayde Preston, Donald May, Kenneth MacDonald

Colt .45 was a three-season Warner Bros. Television series,  a loose adaptation of the 1950 film, it's set in 1870s American West, Colt .45 starred Wayde Preston (Today We Kill... Tomorrow We Die!) as Christopher Colt, a man who travels the Old West as a travelling gun salesman  - it was the Old West after all - but is secretly an undercover agent for the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, meant to find places where law and order have fallen to the wayside, and to make sure that law and order is properly restored before moving on. It's a pretty standard episodic western, but Preston is a charismatic lead and pulls you in, plus we get guest appearances from the likes of Adam West, Charles Bronson, Leonard Nimoy, baseballer Sandy Koufax, Angie Dickinson, Alan Hale Jr. and loads more familiar faces of the era. Interestingly, the second season was problematic and by third season series star Preston was replaced by actor Donald May who played Sam Colt, Jr., a cousin of Preston’s character. Late-50's TV westerns are a bit out of my wheelhouse so I cam into this pretty blind, though for years I have heard TV and western collector's talking about this show that had fallen into obscurity. Well, the Warner Archive have answered those calls with a terrific three-season Blu-ray set that collects all  of the long unavailable
67 episodes remastered from 4K scans of the original negatives. Holy cow, I have seen some vintage 50's TV shows make their way to Blu-ray and DVD, but I was startled with just how crisp and refined the monochromatic western looked in HD, I was blown away. The source looks immaculate with nary a blemish in sight, it's spotless, but the grain is unmolested. I cannot say that the show did much for me on a personal level, growing up in the 70's I was never a big vintage western TV fan, but it looks and sounds great with uncompressed English DTS-HD MA 20 dual-mono audio that is as pleasing as the visuals. Sadly, no extras for this set, I think the drama around why Preston was replaced on the show might have made for a cool featurette. The 10-disc set comes house in a sideloading slipcase, inside there are three individual keep cases, one for each season. Again, while this is not my cup o' tea I know Warner Archive are making vintage TV western fans quite happy my bring this from the vault and putting it onto their shelves with pristine A/V presentation rarely afforded to these vintage TV shows.

WEDNESDAY: SEASON 1 (2022)

Label: WBDHE
Region Code: Region-Free
Rating: TV-14
Duration: 389 Minutes
Audio: Uncompressed English DTS-HD MA 5.1 with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen
Director:
Cast: Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Xavier Thorpe, Emma Myers, and Joy Sunday, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez,  Fred Armisen

The kooky and spooky Addam's Family spin-off Wednesday stars Jenna Ortega as the titular deadpan teen Wednesday, the macabre witted sibling of Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones, The Haunting) and father Gomez Addams (Luis Guzman, Waiting...). At the start of the first episode she is expelled from her highschool after dealing with bullies who bully her brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) by dropping live piranhas the school pool during swim class. She is then enrolled at her parent's alma mater, the Nevermore Academy, outside of Jericho, Vermont,  place inhabited by ghouls, spooks, vampires and other assorted not-mormals, with the disembodied hand "Thing" left behind to keep an eye on her.

She has plans to runaway from the school but ends up getting caught-up in a murder mystery involving teens being torn apart by a creature in the woods near the school. Investigating the death is sheriff Donovan Galpin (Jamie McShane, Mank), who is not a fan of the supernatural student body as the school. Other characters include Wednesday's mismatched roommate Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) a werewolf, painterly vampire Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White, TV's The Gifted), Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday, Dog), and a sort of love interest by way of local barista Tyler Galpin (Hunter Dooha, Truth Be Told), the son of the sheriff, the school principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Wednesday's court-ordered therapist Dr. Valerie Kinbott (Riki Lindhome, Knives Out), and Christina Ricci (who played Wednesday in the Barry Sonnenfeld The Addam's Family movie) as a sympathetic teacher at the school. While it is Wednesday centric we do get some of Morticia and Gomez, as well as a bit of George Burcea as Lurch and SNL alum Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester. If you're a fan of stuff like The addams Family proper, Scooby-Doo, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, or even the modern takes on Riverdale and Nancy Drew this will probably tickle your macabre mystery bone, the monster mystery is engaging, plus we get Wednesday dealing with an emerging psychic vision, and a supernatural mystery from 25 years ago involving her parents and the death of fellow student Garrett Gates, a descendant of Joseph Crackstone, the monster-hating founder of Jericho. The series is exec produced by Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow) who also directed the first four episodes,  setting the tone for the series quite nicely, but the star here is Jenna Ortega who is just a treasure as Wednesday. The 2-disc Blu-ray set looks and sounds solid, unfortunately there are no extras whatsoever.

Cast: Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman, Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle,

All 9 seasons of the USA Network's legal-drama Suits (2011-2019) is another show that;s not in my wheelhouse, I tend to keep it horror, cult, sci-fi and thrillers and I was long ago burned out on legal drama with a steady of Matlock in the 80s, and L.A. Law and the still unending parade of Law & Order shows that are still being made, I know because my wife and two girl watch quite a bit. There's just too much solid horror, sci-fi, thrillers and quirky comedies for me to dedicate any time watching any legal eagle/melodrama, much less watching all nearly 100 hours of this long-running series, but I did watch enough to see that it's a pretty handsomely and slick shot series, and if you're "into" legal drama it's probably gonna scratch that itch.
The series is summarized as " fast-paced, high-stakes world of a Manhattan corporate law firm where hotshot attorney Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) makes a risky move by hiring legal prodigy Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) as his new associate despite not having a college or law degree. The two are forced to keep up the charade as they become an irrepressible duo. Boundaries are crossed, alliances are tested, and fallouts are inevitable in the riveting nine seasons which also star Meghan Markle, Gina Torres, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman, Dule Hill, Amanda Schull and Katherine Heigl", and sure enough that holds up. Not for me,  but all nine seasons (134 episodes) are spread out across 35-disc here, each season getting it's own dedicated keepcase housed inside a side-loading slipbox.

EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS - THE COMPLETE SERIES (1997)

Label: SPHE
Region Code: 1
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 860 Minutes
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 2.0 with Optional English Subtitles
Video: Fullscreen SD (1.33:1)
Cast: Tara Strong, Maurice LaMarche, Jason Marsden, Alfonso Ribeiro, Rino Romano, Billy West

Extreme Ghostbusters (1997) was a one season sequel series to The Real Ghostbusters, which aired from 1986 to 1991. The events take place years after after the events of The Real Ghostbusters animated series, with the original Ghostbusters crew having moved on from ghost-busting after the spirit world seemed to have cooled down. The only returning original Ghostbuster is big-brain nerd Egon Spengler (voiced by Maurice LaMarche, Futurama), who is now a college professor who lectures on paranormal. He still lives in the Ghostbusters firehouse HQ with his sidekick Slimer (voiced by Billy West, Futurama), and when supernatural activity suddenly resurges across New York he recruits a new batch of Ghostbusters, comprised of four college students;  goth-brainiac occult-expert Kylie Griffin (voiced by Tara Strong, Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold), sarcastic hispanic slacker Eduardo Rivera (Rino Romano, Spider-Man Unlimited), wheelchair bound jock Garrett Miller (Jason Marsden, Robot Jox), and Roland Jackson (voiced by Alfonso Ribeiro, Ticks), a black mechanical whiz. Also returning is Janine Melnitz (voiced by Pat Musick, Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School).
This is not a series I caught when it first aired, I was an "adult" by then and the work schedule in an era before DVDR and streaming was prohibitive, though somehow I always managed to squeeze in episodes of X-Men: The Animated SeriesSpider-ManThe Savage DragonThe Tick, Spider-Man UnlimitedBatman: The Animated Series, and Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, so maybe it was just the "Extreme" Ghostbuster title sounded sort of annoying and made me think of Mountain Dew and Dorado "extreme" ads. Over the years I managed to catch a few random episodes here and there but never really gave it a bunch of thought. Watching it now I was quite taken with the show, especially considering this is perhaps the first show to feature a senior member if the team handing off the ghost-busting reigns to the next generation, something that we saw more recently with the movie franchise with Ghostbuster: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which is cool.
The animation style reminded me a bit of the Jackie Chan Adventures (2001-2005) animated series, and looking into it they were both produced by Sony's now dormant Adelaide Productions, so that makes sense. The style is vivid and moody with some very cool creature and ghost designs, I was pleasantly surprised just how dark this one goes for 90's kid-friendly animated series, and I am pretty sure if you were a young kid in the 90's this one churned out some future monster-kids for sure, lot of cool creature/ghost designs on display here.  Each episode, some of them two-parters, featured a new ghost, goblin, demon, vampire clown, trolls or some other spooky  supernatural entity. Egon and Janine take more supervisory positions and do not partake in the ghost-busting all that often, and slimer is related to mostly just firehouse and food-based comedy, annoying the new team, but the ghost-busting action is pretty great.  while I was initially not a huge fan of the animation style it's definitely grown on me, as has the series as a whole. At the time I don't think anyone really appreciated that they were doing something different with the franchise that had not been done before. It was a solid idea and it was executed fairly well, the only thing that annoyed me is the new darker version of Ray Parker Jr.'s theme song "Ghostbusters" as sung by Jim Cummigs is pretty dang terrible. It's great to have the complete series at least on DVD, I just wish Sony would have put a little more thought and love into restoring these and offering some extras. All 40 episodes are spread across 9 discs with 4-5 episodes per disc. Sadly, there are zero extras for this set. The 9-disc release arrives in an oversized clear keepcase with 4 flipper trays holding the discs, with a single-sided sleeve of artwork.

RICK AND MORTY: THE COMPLETE SEVENTH SEASON
(2023)

Label: WBDHE
Region Code: A
Rating: TV- MA
Duration: 225 Minutes
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 5.1 with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (1.78:1)
Cast: Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, Sarah Chalke, Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, Tom Kenny,  Kari Wahlgren,
Keith David, Susan Sarandon

The intergalactic adventure of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty continue for a wild seventh season, this being the first season without the voice talents of series co-creator Justin Roiland who voiced the titular Rick and Morty, but who was let go from the show following some unsavory allegations both behind-the-scenes and at home, a move which begged the question, how will that effect the show? Well, fear not, in his place this season and presumably going forward we have the voice talents of Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden capably filling the void. I was hard pressed to detect a big difference here in the voice acting of the titular characters, which made the transition practically seamless.

Rick and Morty's misadventures continue with 10 more batshit episodes that are sure to please both the long time fans and newcomers alike, continuing the show's long-running deconstruction of genre tropes, skewering pop-culture, reveling in bad taste, fun visual gags and offering a general sense of anything goes, but always with a level of depth still catches me by surprise at times. The first episode starts off with the alcoholic Mr. Poopybutthole who is uncomfortably living with the Smiths while trying to reunite with his ex, only to discover that she is now dating Gul'karna, the Predator-alien private investigator Poopybutthoel hired to keep an eye on her; oh, and Hugh Jackmen plays a large part in this episode as well. Later exploits feature Rick and Jerry both dying only to be reanimated by Rick's medical robot which causes them to share brains, creating a duo they dub Burger & Fries, before transforming into "Jerricky", plus we get a mid-season highlight with Rick and Morty catching up to Rick's arch-nemesis Rick Prime finally, whom they bloodily defeat with the help of Evil-Morty. In "Wet Kuat Amortican Summer" Summer and Morty are transformed into a becomes a "Kuato" (you know, like from Total Recall) after abusing a "attribute slider" technology, and then Morty storm Rick can enter Valhalla to ensure Rick's afterlife, which involves battling Bigfoot and defeating the Pope with a Poké Ball. It gets even weirder with the food-ethics episode about suicide-spaghetti, and the season finale featuring Morty conquering his fears by facing the "fear hole" in Denny's bathroom,

The writing this season is quite strong, though some of the edgier gross-out humor seems to be a tad toned down this season, but it's a still a wicked wild ride from start to finish, chock full of irreverent humor, stuffed with pop culture Easter Eggs, and a still surprising amount of character depth. This should come as no surprise but I love season seven of the show, and happily it's been renewed for an eight season which is set to air in early 2024.

The single-disc release arrives in an eco-case with a 2-sided sleeve of artwork, the inner-sleeve featuring illustrations of Rick and Morty as well as other characters, plus an a listing of the episodes and special features. This is housed in a side-loading slipcase.
