Game Night (2018) is a fun date-night comedy, about a happily married couple Max (Jason Bateman, Teen Wolf Too) and Annie Davis (Rachel McAdams, HBO's True Detective) who regularly host weekly couples' game night with their friends who include couple Kevin (Lamorne Morris, TV's Fargo) and Michelle (Kylie Bunbury, Warning), and their single-guy friend Ryan (Billy Magnussen, Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet) who usually brings a different girl to each game night, usually making it a point to avoid their cop neighbor Gary (Jesse Plemons, Black Mass), a recent divorcee who is quietly weird.

. Max is super-competitive and never more so than when his older charismatic bother Brooks (Kyle Chandler, King Kong) returns after some time out of the country, when he decides to host a Game Night at his mansion, surprising everyone with a interactive role-playing mystery game, announcing that the winner will get the keys to his Stingray Corvette. When masked gunman arrive and kidnap Brooks the couples assume it's all part of the game, only to discover that the the kidnapping is real, exposing truths about Brooks life, and making for one heck of an entertaining game night.
I won't ruin all the fun twists and turns here other than to say it involves a black market Fabergé egg and dueling buyers, and that I was not expecting the places this one went, it's a seriously fun flick. The main cast is wonderful, and we get appearances from Sharon Horgan (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) as Sarah Ryan's most recent date who proves to be quite a bit less vapid than his usual blondies.
There are also appearances from Danny Huston (American Horror Story), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), and Jeffrey Wright (The Batman), and character subplots that include a hilarious celebrity-infidelity and Max and Annie's struggle to have a child. On top of that it has a wonderful self-awareness that never really oversteps, and I liked the visual flourishes we get, and some late-in-the-game twists and turns that kept me guessing just a little bit and made me question the reality of the threat, which sort of brought to mind Fincher's The Game, only much less dark and quite a bit funnier as well. This one comes from the co-directors
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also brought us Vacation and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, both of which I quite liked, so if you've seen those and enjoy them I would imagine you will be in the bag for Game Night.
Audio/Video: Game Night (2018) arrives on 4K Ultra HD from WBDHE in 2160p UHD framed in 2.39:1 widescreen with Dolby Vision (HDR10). The digital shot film looks flawless, detail and textures are sharp looking, colors are vibrant and black levels excel, the WGC-infused color-grading looks terrific, primaries shine. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround with optional English subtitles. It's a boisterous and punchy affair, the comedy turns into dark action for stretches, accompanied by gun fire and action-oriented moments that are served well by the sound design.
Extras are carried-over from the previous 2018 Blu-ray, we get the 4-min An Unforgettable Evening: The Making of Game Night and a 7-min Gag Reel, and I these gag reels from comedies always bring a smile to my face, it's pretty clear they had a lot of fun making this one.
