Psychological-thriller Spiral (2007) was co-directed by Adam Green (Hatchet) and Joel David Moore (Avatar), who also stars in the film. It's set in the almost always drizzly Portland, Oregon, where we meet a painfully awkward asthmatic named Mason (Joel David Moore, Grandma's Boy), he's socially inept and clicks his teeth when anxious. He works at one of those fluorescent light lit call center offices, and his only friend seems to be Berkely (Zachary Levi, Shazam!), the call center's office manger, who seems to be trying to help him be more sociable but also seems like a real asshole. Outsider Mason is a loner who sketches and paints images of women in his free time at home, where he listens to jazz music, and has recurring visions of a woman we see in a sketch book which he carries around with him. 

One day at work while eating lunch alone outside a co-worker named Amber (Amber Tamblyn, Y the Last Man Standing) unexpectedly makes attempts to reach out to him. She's bubbly and sort of forces herself into a friendship with him, showing interest in him which starts to bring him out of his shell just a bit. Eventually she becomes his new muse, posing for sketches and later paintings for him in his apartment. He's still a bit cagey, but it seems as though a romance is blossoming between. 

We know from the start that Mason is a bit odd at the very least, when he's at his apartment he strangely avoids his bathroom, brushing his teeth at the kitchen sink while glancing nervously at the bathroom door. When it become clear that Amber will be visiting his apartment soon we see him dispose of something large he drags out of the bathroom... oh shit, what's this nice girl got herself mixed up in? Amber is unaware of a past trauma suffered by Mason that has haunted his life,  which has made him into the twitchy weirdo that he is today, and by the time she realizes what kind of damaged soul he is it might be too late for her to escape his derangement. 

I remember this being heavily advertised as a Hitchcockian thriller when it first made the rounds, and while it's definitely a psychological thriller, let's not be too generous and call it Hitchcockian. I would put it more along the lines of a Repulsion or May than I would say Hitchcock's Psycho, but it's a solid psycho-thriller, even if it broadcasts a lot of it's mystery early on. Joel David Moore does twitchy and awkward quite well, and he comes across as deranged but sympathetic. I thought the character Amber was far too sweet and too naive, but it still works within the context of the flick, and the twisty turns there at the end while not exactly startling have a nice emotional punch to it, and I like that it's a bit open-ended and could be interpreted a bit differently depending on your viewing. Not a perfect film, but I like it quite a bit, and if you like twisty psychological thrillers Spiral (2007) is certainly worth a watch. 

Audio/Video: Spiral (2007) arrives on region-free Blu-ray from Ronin Flix, advertised as a "film restoration completed by Ronin Flix", framed in 1.78:1 widescreen, 1080p HD. It;'s a sharp looking transfer, the neon in the opening scenes look luminous, colors are bold, the fluorescent lighting of the call office cubicles is appropriately sickly. Depth and clarity far surpass my old Anchor Bay DVD, skin tones are quite improved, and the grain is nicely resolved, with close-ups showcasing textures, facial pores and stubble with a nice sharpness. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround with optional English subtitles. The track is clean and well-balanced, it's largely a dialogue driven film with some nice atmospheric touches, the nearly all-Jazz score by Todd Caldwell and Michael Herring sounds terrific, plus we get pop song "Sometimes" by Alex Lloyd that also sound great.

In the Howard Avedis (Mortuary) directed drive-in programmer Texas Detour (1978) a trio of California teenagers, aspiring stuntman Clay (Patrick Wayne, The Searchers, the son of John Wayne), country musician Dale (Mitch Vogel, TV's Bonanza) and sweet and sexy Sugar (Lindsay Bloom, Sixpack Annie) are headed to Nashville, TN so that Clay can pursue his stuntman career and Dale can make it big as a country star. However, they find themselves stranded in bumble-fuck Texas when their van is stolen by a trio of deranged prison escapees. While thumbing it down they road they encounter a stranded motorist by way of Beau Hunter (Anthony James, High Plains Drifter), and when Clay gets his jalopy running he gives the trio a lift to the Sheriff (R.G. Armstrong, The Car), who is none to obliging, and does nothing o help them recover their stolen van. He offers to let the spend the night in one of his cell's but the trio accept Beau's offer for lodging at the country mansion of his father (Cameron Mitchell, Raw Force), a local big-wig who draws a lot of water in the small community, who also offers them work on his ranch. There Clay meets Beau's sexy sister Bo's hot sister Claudia (Priscilla Barnes, the three-nippled gypsy from Mallrats!), and the pair really hit it off. It turns out that Beau is a real creep, which is not surprising in the least considering he's played by cinema-scum bag Anthony James, and he heavily hits on  Sugar, and he gets angry when she rebuffs his advances, as she's more interested in kind-hearted tow-truck driver Billy (Michael Mullins, The Pom Pomp Girls). Meanwhile musician Dale set's his sights on the sheriff's daughter Karen (Kathy O'Dare, East My Dust). 

The increasingly jealous Beau ends-up raping Sugar with Clay chasing after him and opening up a can whoop-ass on him, until the fight is broken up by the Sheriff. Later Beau ends up dead, murdered during a brawl at a bar, but the crime gets pinned on Beau, leading to him having to take the law into his own hands to clear his name. 

A fun Southern fried slice of redneck drive-in cinema from the '70s to be sure, we get plenty of top-drawer nudity, dirt bike action, horse, Dukes of Hazzard-esque car chases and car-jumps, fist-fights, and small town politics. It's still enjoyable but this feels like it's just being made up as it goes along, and there's fun to be had with that, just don't expect it all to make sense at the end of the day, you just sort of have to go with it. The finale is all fired-up and is plenty action-packed with car chases and bridge-jumps, there's an explosion, accidental friendly fire, it's a real hoot and holler slice of hicksploitation, and while it's a bit shabby it's totally entertaining. Again, not great cinema, bit a pretty terrific slice of drive-in exploitation from the late-70s. 

Audio/Video: Texas Detour (1978) arrives on region-free Blu-ray from Dark Force Entertainment in 1080p HD widescreen (1.85:1). The film was previously issued on Blu-ray from Code Red as a double-feature with Cuba Crossing (1980), now OOP, which I do not have for comparison. This is advertised as "new 4K scan with brand new color correction from the original uncut 35mm camera negative". It looks solid with some white speckling, nicks, and tiny scratches, but colors are generally strong and look pleasing. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 2.0 dual-mono with optional English subtitles. The track sounds fine, it's not super-robust but dialogue is rendered well and that soundtrack with popular music knock-offs is quite amusing. 

The sole extras is a Audio Commentary with Randy Cognata and cult director Damon Packard, moderated by Demon Dave and Joe. The single-disc release arrives in a standard keepcase with a single-sided sleeve of artwork featuring the original illustrated movie poster artwork.

AMC's Interview with a Vampire series, based on Anne Rice's seminal novel, tells the tale of Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson, Game of Thrones), a hustler operating out of New Orleans in the early 1900's, who meets hedonistic French vampire Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid, The Newsreader), a charming bloodsucker  who invites him to become his immortal vampire lover and companion, which he accepts. The decades long story is told in flashback as Louis recounts his afterlife-story from a state of the art high-rise in modern-day Dubai, to an acerbic journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian, Special Effects), who has a history with Louis after a mysterious encounter in San Francisco back in the early '70s. The intoxicating tale, including the the introduction of 14-year-old vampire Claudia (Bailey Bass), a sort of adopted daughter for the vampire couple, who proves to be quite challenging and forceful.

I am not someone familiar with the novel or the '90's adaptation starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, somehow I have managed not to see it for all these years, so I came into this with only the basic premise in mind, and having no comparison to how it measures up against the source material. Watching it I was engrossed from the first episode, the early 1900's New Orleans setting in the Storyville neighborhood is Gothic cat-nip, dripping with mood and atmosphere, the show's production design and costuming looks terrific, it just looks like some serious money is onscreen here, and it's visually stunning slice of television.  

The story of vampire love is fraught tension and suspense, it turns out that being a bloodsucking immortal not only allows for a long-life, but also allows time for passions to boil over, and the perils  of raising an eternal teenage bloodsucker proves to be quite a challenging. The contentious love story between Lestat and Louis never dulls, and is often inflamed by the presence of the headstrong and often brattish and impulsive Claudia, as does Louis decision to not feed on humans, to only drink the blood of animals, while Lestat and Claudia hunt nightly for human prey. Season one ends with quite an impactful and blood-soaked finale with major repercussions, which includes a wonderfully campy and gory Mardi Grass Ball at their home.

The second season picks-up immediately where season one left off, with Louis recounting his tale to reporter Daniel in Dubai, who often pushes back on the story being told looking for truth and clarity. For the second season the character of Claudia was recast with Delainey Hayles (Holby City) capably assuming the role, which took some getting use to, because I adored Bailey Bass, and as I watched these seasons back to back over the course of three nights the change was quite noticeable, so the shift felt abrupt, but Hayles won me over. The pair have fled New Orleans after the events of the first season, travelling to post-war Europe in search of more of their kind. It's a hardscrabble life of wandering, along the way encountering a grotesque feral vampire in the Romanian forest, an experience that is unsettling for Claudia. They end up in  Paris, where they discover a coven of vampires who operate a macabre vampire-theater. There Louis once again finds a love interest by way of the coven's leader, the ancient vampire Armand (Assad Zaman, Hotel Portofino) while Claudia looks to join the coven looking for a sense of belonging. The change in setting to a post-war Europe is just as stunning as New Orleans, there's new love and a new chemistry, but it seems that the thrall of Lestat looms large for both Claudia and Louis, and surprisingly for Armand as well, all of whom struggle to free themselves from Lestat’s far-reaching grip. 

The show's mix of Gothic period settings, and vampiric melodrama is a heady concoction, season two gets a bit campier, especially towards the end when Louis embarks on a bloody revenge killing-spree in the past, and how things resolve in the current day Dubai, but I loved it, I was absolutely was enthralled by the first two seasons of the show, and I am looking forward to checking out season three when it arrives, and seeing where things go from here.  

Audio/Video: Seasons 1 and 2 of AMC's Interview with a Vampire arrives on a 5-disc Blu-ray set from Acorn Media International. The show is presented in 1080p HD 

2.00:1 widescreen, and it looks largely terrific. The flashbacks to New Orleans and Paris have a nice earthy tones to them, while the current day Dubai interview segments are sharper and more colorful. Compression looks solid, I noticed a bit of banding in spots, but otherwise the discs are well-authored with a supportive bit rate. Black levels are strong, and colors look wonderful, especially the splashes of red when the bloodsucking and carnage starts up. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 5.1 with optional English subtitles, the track is well-balanced and nicely robust during the livelier sequences.  

Extras include the 40-min 2022 San Diego Comic-Con Panel; the 4-min Pre-Premiere Inside Look; 2-min Blooper Reel; and the 43-min "Show Me More" Interview With A Vampire: Season 2. The 50disc set arrives in a keepcase with two flipper trays housing the 5 Blu-ray discs, with a single-sided sleeve of illustrated artwork.
