Every horror fan that is worth a pint of blood knows very well that Wesley Earl Craven created one of the all-time greatest fright films in 1977's timeless terror-piece THE HILLS HAVE EYES. Following up his trendsetting THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972), Craven crafted a chiller that is largely seen as a gore game-changer - channelling cannibalism, family conflict and bone-crunching jump-scares. However what few viewers know is that, after the official sequel THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 in 1985, Craven himself would begin badgering away at an attempt to continue his classic desert-set mythology and expand its already fantastical scope into an even more supernatural-themed direction... The result was MIND RIPPER - released in some territories as THE HAVE EYES PART 3: THE OUTPOST - and a certified VHS-era hit. Released to critical enthusiasm in 1995 and starring the legendary Lance Henriksen (ALIENS/ NEAR DARK/ PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING), MIND RIPPER returns viewers to the endless sand-scapes of the Mojave Desert in California for another heart-thumping race against a mutated monster with limp-lopping evil on his mind!
Co-written and co-produced by Jonathan Craven, the son of the original fear-master, and overseen with the approval of Craven himself - albeit with directorial duties from Joe Gayton (of Dwayne Johnson actioner FASTER) - MIND RIPPER aptly anticipates the later THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake from 2006, by introducing audiences to a science lab buried deep underground. There, scientists experiment with the human form - although their Frankenstein-like enthusiasm from creating Cronenbergian creatures eventually gets the better of them... Also inspired by the pulse pounding sci-fright of the ALIEN franchise, and nodding to such genre benchmarks as John Carpenter's THE THING and HELLRAISER, this is a special effects-heavy heart-thumper that holds up as well today as it did 23 years ago!
