Severin's latest box set odyssey is the 24-film, 13-disc Blu-ray + 2-disc CD set The Sensual World of Black Emanuelle, a massive compendium of softcore sex film films starring the exquisite Indonesian actress Laura Gemser, most frequently in collaboration with writer/director Joe D’Amato, as well as Bruno Mattei and others. This set is an astonishing tribute to Black Emanuelle with largely new scans of the films, as well as over 40 hours of deep-diving extras that include alternate versions, audio commentaries, video essays, a documentary on Gemser’s husband/co-star Gabriele Tinti, the ‘80s Gemser workout video Looking Good, and loads more, including 2 CD of rare soundtrack music from the flicks.
We're tackling the set one film at a time, and this week we're exploring one of the more nutty entries in the series - and that is certainly saying something - Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade (1978) which shares a disc with Sister Emanuelle.

White Slave Trade (1978) is directed by Joe D'Amato (Sex and Black Magic), who made some of the more sensational and lunatic Black Emanuelle entries, including Emanuelle in America and Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals. In it euro-cult goddess Gemser plays the typically horny photojournalist Emanuelle, who in this entry is out to expose the white slave trade. At the start of the film Emanuelle teams-up with comely model Susan (Ely Galleani, Born For Hell) as they set out to find an elusive mafia boss in Kenya, but they are sidetracked when Susan makes a pitstop at a car mechanics to have her undercarriage tuned-up; also known as having sex in the grease pit, while Emanuelle stays inside the car and masturbates to the sexy happening. Then it's off to the airport disguised as stewardesses to get close to an elusive Prince. While at the airport Emanuelle sees a weird exchange with a guy named Francis (Gabriele Tinti, Violence in a Women's Prison) seemingly exchanging a young woman in a wheelchair for a suitcase full of cash, which puts the horny reporter on the trail of a new, more interesting story - the titular white slave trade! She tracks down Francis in New York and goes undercover to attract his attention, and he likes what he sees and recruits her into the sex trade, run by the high-stakes Madame Claude (Gota Gobert, Emanuelle in America), who caters to the perversions of the rich and powerful, including at least one U.S. senator.
The globe-trotting erotic romp travels from Africa and New York City before heading to the West Coast where most of the story plays out. Having Joe D'Amato at the helm for a white slave trade plot sounds like it would be a fun, exploitation gig but the filmmaking dial has clearly been set to "recycle", and what we get is a long-padded travelogue with copious amounts of nude modeling montages and stock-footage African safaris. Now do not get me wrong, there's still plenty of sex and nudity, Gemser and Galleani are easy on the eyes, but the story and production around them are clearly on auto-pilot and no one seems interested in making an overly interesting movie, let alone coming up with new ideas, but as a sexed-up travelogue it's still pretty entertaining and steamy stuff.
The best material here is the white slave trade stuff with Emanuelle undercover, snapping photos with her Zippo spy-camera, and peeping people through keyholes, but it takes a good while to get there and it never really digs into it. A highlight is the Madame's right-hand drag-queen, a guy named Stefan (Nicola D'Eramo, Poliziotti Violenti), who aligns himself with Emanuelle after sleeping with her, but ends up in a bowling alley brawl with his head smashed in with a bowling pin; it's a definite highlight of the film, but there's not enough of that sort of bizarre violent action for my tastes. The flick also offers plenty of sex complete with multiple lesbian trysts, three-ways, and bopping a few too many old men along the way, but it's all a bit tame and none of the couplings have any chemistry whatsoever, aside from the non-sex stuff with Gemser and her then husband Gabriele Tinti. There's nothing even approaching the shocking horse-cock shenanigans of Emanuelle in America, but hey, there's plenty of nudity, the cinematography is decent, and the score from Nico Fidenco is pretty great, so it's still an entertaining slice of euro-cult starring the alluring Laura Gemser.
Audio/Video: Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade (1978) arrives on Blu-ray from Severin Films advertised as a 2K scan from the OCN, presented here in 1080p HD widescreen (1.85:1). The film was previously issues by Full Moon Features in 2021 but the new Severin release blows it away, gone is the DNR-scrubbed sickly yellow pallor of the previous release, there's an organic layer of of course film grain, the color-timing is vastly improved as it depth and clarity, it's quite a pleasing upgrade. Audio comes by way of Italian or English-dubbed DTS-HD MA 2.0 dual-mono with optional English subtitles. Dialogue is clean and free of issues, and the score from Nico Fidenco (Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals) was pretty fantastic, you will be hard-pressed to remove the tune "Run Cheetah Run" from ear ear-holes, and overall it's a pretty swanky disco-era score.
Extras include a new Audio Commentary With Film Programmer Lars Nilsen; the 11-min The Bohemian – Interview With Actor Venantino Venantini who recounts the three Black Emanuelle films he appeared in; the 51-min Come In Un Film: La Vera Storia Di Gabriele (Gastone) Tinti 2016 Documentary By Riccardo Marchesini which is a very nice tribute to Tinti; plus the 2-min Trailer.

Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade (1978) was to be Italian director Joe D'Amato's last entry in the Black Emanuelle series, and it's showing signs of fatigue, leaning too heavily on the earlier entries, but Gemser is still a goddess and a joy to behold in all her many nude sex scenes.
There are 24-Black Emanuelle film on this set, and while I have not watched them all as of yet, this particular entry has always been of one my favorites. If you're a fan of the Black Emanuelle series or are into naughty Euro-trash this is a must-own slice of D'Amato directed exploitation, it's hot stuff, and peppered with plenty of D'Amato's trademark lunatic touches, and Laura Gemser looks fantastic and is quite a magnetic presence onscreen throughout.
This gorgeous set arrives with a sturdy Rigid Slipcase with a naughty view-finder type feature that is quite cool, very creative the folks over there at Severin. Inside is the DigiBook Packaging that houses the 15-discs (13 Blu-ray, 2 CD) that slip into the pocket sleeves. Each of the heavy cardstock pages feature eye-popping images of Gemser, as do the discs themselves which feature the same key artwork as the pages, Also tucked away inside is an incredibly dense 356-page The Black Emanuelle Bible: Designed by Luke Insect with a cover illustration by Kim Thompson, and edited by Kier-La Janisse. This fully illustrated book is easily the most in-depth and all-encompassing compendium of essays, reviews and archival interviews ever published about the Black Emanuel series - they should totally re-print this as a deluxe hardcover when this box set sells out - its gorgeous. We get new writings on the films from Kevin John Bozelka, Costas Constandinides, Rachel Harrison, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Kier-La Janisse, Jennifer Moorman, Xavier Aldana Reyes, Jorge Rivera-Gutiérrez and Erin Wiegand; plus additional capsule reviews by Bryan Connolly and Craig Ledbetter; and archival interviews with actress Laura Gemser and screenwriter Maria Pia Fusco.
The sheer amount of extras is staggering, over forty-hours worth! These include audio commentaries, XXX inserts, outtakes, new and archival interviews, a location tour, a Gemser workout video, video essays, alternate cuts, alternate credit sequences, and documentaries - it's truly a phenomenal set.
