From director Christopher Guest comes a proper lampooning of the Hollywood system, and of "Oscar" dreams that are built up after unfounded rumors of Oscar consideration swirl around the set of low-budget indie drama 'Home for Purim', about Jewish family in the southern United States in the 1940s. The film stars Marilyn Hack (Catherine O'Hara, Beetlejuice) as the family's dying matriarch; the once venerable Victor Allen Miller (Harry Shearer, Spinal Tap) as her husband; and Callie Webb (Parker Posey, Clockwatchers) as their daughter who comes at as lesbian during the Purim holiday. The actors start to beleieve the hype, setting themselves up for ultimate failure in the end.

The breezy lampooning eschews ten usual "mockumentary" style I would associate worth director Guest's other comedies, and it also features Eugene Levy (Armed and Dangerous) as Miller's agent, Jane Lynch (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Fred Willard (Salem's Lot) as hosts of an entertainment television program clearly lampooning Entertainment Tonight, and the film delightfully exploits the Hollywood systems, including soul-shredding appearances promoting the film on MTV style youth programs and misogynist morning radio programs.
The cast of characters is wide, chock full of Hollywood types like studio boss Ricky Gervais who demands the film be retitles Home for Thanksgiving for broader appeal, screenwriters., Michael McKean (Coneheads), Bob Balaban (Ghostworld), who struggle to make the film "less Jewish" at the behest of the studio boss and the director (Christopher Guest, of course), and the Hack's out-of-touch publicist John Michael Higgins (Vampire's Kiss) who struggles to navigate the world wide web in search of gossip about the film. I also love-love-LOVED Don Lake (A Mighty Wind) and Michael Hitchcock (Best in Show) as film critics who are more than just a little Siskel and Ebert-like.
The satire is ripe and Guests and the ensemble cast feast on it, taking aim at ill-advised plastic surgery, fragile egos, on-set relationships, and smarmy agents, it's all comedy gold, and while this is not my favorite Guest joint it's quite entertaining send-up of Hollywood and the pursuit of Oscar accolades through and through.
Audio/Video: For Your Consideration (2006) arrives on region-free Blu-ray from Warner Archive in 1080p HD frame din the original 1.78:1 widescreen, and it looks terrific with excellent colors and accurate looking skin tones, depth and clarity are also pleasing throughout. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround with optional English subtitles. The track is clean and well-balanced, dialogue is nicely prioritized throughout, and there are no issues with hiss or distortion. The track is mostly front and center, occasionally the score dipping into the surrounds, but not much else.
