The Hollywood Golden Age comedy Talk of the Town (1942), directed by George Stevens (Giant) make sthe leap from DVD to 4K Ultra HD with this new edition Sony. In it accused arsonist Leopold Dilg (Cary Grant, North By Northwest) makes a daring escapes from jail ona dark and stormy night just before his trial gets underway. Having injured his ankle during the escape he hides out at a summer cottage owned by his highschool crush Nora (Jean Arthur, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), on the very same night that she rents the cottage to a law scholar who is also a Supreme Court candidate, Michael Lightcap (Ronald Colman, Lost Horizon), which poses issues when she lets Dilg hideout in the attic, and she needs to makes exciuses to stay on at teh house, even though Lightcap is looking for solitude. Realizing that keeping Dilg's presence a secret he poses as a gardener, Dilg teams up with the bubbly Nora to convince her summer tenant that Dilg was framed for the crime, but being a stickler for the law once he accidentally learns the true identity of the charming gardener it's going to be an uphill battle. It sounds like quite a crime-caper and it is , but it's also a breezy comedy, and the three stars are fantastic together, with lovely Nora becoming a love interest for both the man-of-law and the man-on-the-run. Perhaps a bit long in the tooth at two-minutes shy of two hours I nonetheless has quite a pleasurable time watching this for the first time. The black and white cinematography looks terrific in 4K with Dolby Vision (HDR10) color-grades, and the uncompressed DTS-HD audio sounds flawless. Extras include an Audio Commentary with Author Marilyn Ann Moss plus the 5-min Talking About "Talk of the Town" Featurette with filmmaker George Stevens Jr., the directors son, talking about his father and Cary Grant's on-screen collaborations, and his father's directing style. It's very brief and slightly shallow, but appreciated just the same. We also get a Slipcover and a 4K Digital copy of the film. This release is 4K UHD only, no Blu-ray copy included and no Blu-ray has yet been announced, so it might be time to upgrade to 4K for any vintage cinema fans not yet using the 4K format.

Director: Edward Zwick

Legends of the Fall (1994) is period epic directed by Edward Zwick (Glory), and tells tale the disillusioned Colonel William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins, Magic) who moves to the mountains of Montana to raise his family after leaving the military because of the unsavory way that the American government treated the First Nations. He builds a ranch in a remote area with his wife Isabel (Christina Pickles, Masters of the Universe), and their three sons Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel. Also joining them are Cree friend One Stab (Gordon Tootoosis, Lonesome Dove: The Series), ranch hand Decker (Paul Desmond) with his Cree wife Pet (Tantoo Cardinal, Dances with Wolves), and their young daughter Isabel Two. As the boys grow older the mother grows weary of the harsh winters and moves to the East Coast, leaving the Colonel to raise his boys. When the youngest Samuel (Henry Thomas, Doctor Sleep) attends Harvard he returns with a new wife-to-be, the stunning Susannah (Julia Ormond, The Walking Dead: The World Beyond) who makes quite an impression on his older sibling Alfred (Aidan Quinn, Desperately Seeking Susan) and Tristan (Brad Pitt, Se7en). you become smitten with her. Not long after WWI breaks out and Samuel and Alfred enlist against their father's wishes, as does Tristan after swearing to Susannah to look after his brother. The film tracks the family for 50 years, there's death, suicide, tragedy and estrangement, all of it gorgeously adorned with cinematographer John Toll's (Braveheart) painterly imagery of the frontier with gorgeous valley vistas, winding rivers and rugged mountaintop terrains, as well as a couple of stunning WW1 set pieces, plus a sweeping James Horner (Glory) score, and engaging melodrama that brought tears o my eyes more than once. It's a gorgeous 4K upgrade, grain looks solid, the period setting and clothing textures shine, the Dolby Vision (HDR10) color-grade elevates it, and we get a Dolby Atmos remix that sends the score soaring. There's also an array of archival extras as listed below, a slipcover and a 4K digital copy of the film.

Director: Todd Phillips
Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga,, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz
In the Todd Phillips directed sequel Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham while awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker, still struggling with his dual identity. It's still very much the gritty character study we saw in the first film, still channeling Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, only this time it gets weirder with the infusion of a bizarre Busby Berkley musical elements, which is perfect since the film stars Lady Gaga as Harleen "Lee" Quinzel, a sort of psychiatric-tourist who latches onto Arthur/Joker, offering him a glimmer of the love he's never known. While there are glimmers of hope, this is still very much the sad, pathetic Arthur/Joker story, it's still a fascinating character study, but this one, even more than the first film, is not likely to appeal to those looking for comic-book status quo cinema, this is a wild, and often challenging watch, but it opens with a choice piece of animation in the style of Looney Tunes that was produced by French animator Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Bellville), but right after that it dives headfirst right into the misery porn, complete with a 9/11-esque bombing scene that. This is gonna be decisive for sure, I sort of love how weird it goes, but I also sort of hate it, too. I think I need a few more viewing, but I think it's a fascinating watch, as a sequel to a billion dollar fiom it does things you wouldn't expect, and that's cool. Regardless of how you feel about it, less divisive is how terrific the 4K UHD looks and sounds with glorious Dolby Vision and Atmos upgrades, plus over an hour of extras!
