DIS (2019) (Unearthed Films Blu-ray Review)

DIS (2019)

Label: Unearthed Films
Region Code: A
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 60 Minutes
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 5.1, English PCM 2.0 Stereo (No Subtitles)
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (2.35:1)
Director: Adrian Corona
Cast:  Bill Oberst Jr., Lori Jo Hendrix, Peter Gonzales Falcon, Manuel Domínguez

Dis (2019) from director Adrian Corona is a sixty-minute slice of arthouse dread starring Bill Oberst Jr. (Dismal) who plays an former soldier with a spotty past, first seen wandering the rural landscapes of Mexico, the film is peppered with black and white flashbacks that fill in sparse amounts of information about his checkered past. In the woods I am unsure if he's on-the-run or on-the-prowl, but his journey leads him to a creepy abandoned building, itself a labyrinth of corridors covered in graffiti street art. The place is also home to a mysterious hooded figure that has an unholy penchant for chaining victims to a wall, injecting them with something surely awful and then manually masturbating them to the point of orgasm, then collecting their precious bodily fluids for reasons that are not exactly clear at first.

The film is divided into three chapters spanning only an hour, and in that hour the journey is strange, nightmarish and very slow-burning, with a narrative that is loose to say the least. The film driven by a artful visuals and anchored by a intensely minimalist performance from Bill Oberst Jr., an actor with the sort of storied face that looks to have endured a lifetime of hardship, making his turn here as a broken military man about to receive a reckoning all the more convincing.

The film's title is a nod to Dante’s Inferno, which sort of speaks to the leanings of the film, but I don't want to get too spoilery here, so I won't go much further than that, but honestly this is not a film that you can spoil in my opinion, it's an experience, the sort of thing you let it wash over you, and then you shower the filth away, and there's definitely some filth to be had here, the eye for artful and disturbing imagery on display here is rather impressive.

Audio/Video: Dis (2019) arrives on Blu-ray from Unearthed Films in 1080p HD framed in 2.35:1 widescreen, and is easily one of the most artful and attractive looking films from Unearthed. Shot in Mexico the digitally shot film captures the natural splendor of the forested rural area with lush greens, and the filthy and dilapidated interiors of the abandoned building which features heavily in the film look appropriately disgusting throughout, it's a visually pleasing film, artful an grotesque in equal measure.

Audio comes by way of an English DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix, as well as a PCM 2.0 stereo mix, both are crisp and clean, the immersive design offering some nice use of the surrounds throughout.

Extras include a 2-min introduction by the director, a 19-min short film, and a 5-min interview with actor Bill Oberst Jr. that's unnecessarily split into five parts, plus an image gallery and a selection of Unearthed trailers. Notably, the short film would not play on my LG 4K UltraHD player but played fine on my external Blu-ray.

Special Features:
- Short Film: Portrait (19 min)
- Behind the scenes (3 min)
- Introduction by director Adrian Corona (2 min)
- Interview with Bill Oberst Jr. (5 min)
- Still gallery
- Trailers: Dis (2 min), Atroz (2 min), Torment, Dark Side of the Moon (2 min), Sacrifice (2 min), Where The Dead Go To Die (3 min), Song of Solomon (1 min)

If you're looking for something strange, artfully grotesque and ambitious then Dis (2019) will absolutely fit that bill, plus you get a hypnotic performance from Bill Oberst Jr, and enough nightmare fuel imagery for several films.

Short Film Review: ASSASSINS (2011)

ASSASSINS (2011)
Duration: 10 min
Video: 16:9 Widescreen
Director: Michael Bonomo
Cast: Bill Oberst Jr., Vicente Disanti, Caitlyn Sabrio

A short film. It sounds pretty easy, right? Pumping out a compressed little story in an abbreviated form with a beginning, middle and an end that's coherent and intriguing... wait, that actually sounds kind of excruciating now that I think about it. Well thankfully for you there's short subject directors like Michael Bonomo who fully understand what it takes to make not just a great short film but just a great film, period..

The filmmaker's sixth short film ASSASSINS (2011) is a tale of the fateful meeting of two hitmen; the seasoned, steely-eyed pro Nathan (Bill Oberst Jr., DISMAL) and the newbie Walter (Vicente Disanti) who may just not be cut out for this line of work. Without spoiling the ten minute film too much Walter is a novice hitman whose hit has goes horribly awry. Nathan is then called in to clean-up the mess one way or the other, well there you go.

Right from the get go the film is a well-directed, taut and tense beast, it's a pretty slick short with high production value, attractive cinematography and lighting, tight editing and a low-key but effective score from Kristen Baum (THE BOOK OF ELI).

When it was all over and done with I definitely wanted more in the best possible way, it maintained it's mystery while revealing just enough, which is pretty impressive for a ten minute film. I was left with lingering flavors of Michael Mann's COLLATERAL and a few choice bits of Quentin Tarantino's PULP FICTION as Oberst seemingly channels some of Harvey Keitel's "The Wolf" from that film, the seasoned professional sent in to clean things up.

High marks to this tense thriller from Michael Bonomo, be sure check out his website at the link below where you can watch a few of his previous short films. The film is not yet available online as Bonomo will be travelling the film on the festival circuit quite soon. Also be sure to check out Bill Oberst Jr. over at the wickedly interactive Facebook app
http://www.takethislollipop.com/ which is a truly unnerving social media mindfuck that must be experienced first hand to fully appreciate. 4/5

Bill Oberst Jr. To Play Demon Opposite Robert Loggia in THE LAST SUPPER

Bill Oberst Jr was kind enough to passed along the news that his next gig is appearing opposite acting legend Robert Loggia in the feature film 'The Last Supper'.  I do love me some Robert Loggia who's starred in everything from episodes of 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' to David Lynch's 'Lost Highway' (1997).

Bill Oberst Jr Press Release:

Fresh off back-to-back lead roles in The Asylum's ghost flick A HAUNTING IN SALEM and Drew Daywalt's 18th-century horror film NAKED, actor Bill Oberst Jr. has been cast as a demon in the upcoming feature film THE LAST SUPPER opposite Oscar-nominated veteran actor Robert Loggia.

The film relates the Biblical story of the Last Supper as told through the eyes of the Apostles. Gabriel Sabloff directs from a script by Tommy Blaze. The film shoots this month in Los Angeles. THE LAST SUPPER is produced by David A.R. White for Pure Flix Entertainment, whose founders include singer and actor Randy Travis. Robert Loggia plays the Apostle Peter, who narrates the film. Oberst was tapped by casting director Billy DaMota, CSA to embody the role of the ageless demon who appears to Peter in one-on-one scenes with Loggia.

Loggia, who famously danced with Tom Hanks in BIG and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in THE JAGGED EDGE, has over 200 film and television appearances to his credit including SCARFACE, INDEPENDENCE DAY, the Oscar-winning PRIZZI'S HONOR and hundreds more stretching back to 1956. Loggia has worked in every conceivable genre of film, including a horror turn as a mob boss who becomes a vampire in John Landis' 1992 film INNOCENT BLOOD.

Oberst, who played Jesus Of Nazareth for 10 years in a touring stage ministry before becoming known for darker roles in film and television, says he is glad to be a part of the project. "I believe demons are very real," he says "so playing one is a heavy responsibility. And acting opposite Robert Loggia would be an honor for any actor. I'm a lucky guy and I'm excited."

Bill Oberst Jr. battles vengeful spirits in The Asylum's 'A Haunting in Salem' 3D

The Asylum's 'A Haunting in Salem' is filming in Pasadena, California as we speak. The film is directed by horror veteran Shane Van Dyke who also helmed The Asylum's 'Paranormal Entity' (2009) and is written by first time script-writer H. Perry Horton who just happens to be the brain behind the Asylum-themed website Committed which is described as "one inmate's appreciation for the films of The Asylum". Natch.

The set-up for 'A Haunting in Salem'; the newly-arrived Sheriff in the small community of Salem, Massachusetts discovers he is the unwitting victim of a centuries old curse and must take steps to protect his family from a vengeful spirit who means his family harm. Well, honestly that's a very vague description but it has definite potential and I do love a good ghost chiller, some my favorite of the genre are 'The Changeling' (1980), 'The Fog' (1980), 'The Shining' (1980) 'Poltergeist' (1982) 'The Devil's Backbone' (2004) and if you haven't seen any of 'em stop reading and start watching immediately.

The male lead is none other than uber-creepy dude Bill Oberst Jr. ('Nude Nuns with Big Guns') as the sheriff , Wayne. Oberst is a great talent and a striking presence with a storied face and piercing blue eyes and is sure to knock it outta the park. My hat is off to the producer's of the film for the great casting.

Cast as the sheriff's wife is Courtney Abbiati from TV's 'How I Met Your Mother' and son Kyle is portrayed by newcomer Nicholas Harsin. I'm very pleased to say Harsin is a fellow Arizonan who graduated from the University of Arizona back in 2009. Harsin describes the films as "creepy as hell and is being shot old school, very few special effects, in a 200 year old mansion in Pasadena, CA."

Jenna Stone

The principal cast is rounded out by Jenna Stone (TV's 'Miss Behave') as daughter Ali and a veteran of The Asylum's 'Battle of Los Angeles' (2010) and 'Mega Shark Vs. Crocosaurus' (2010) Gerald Webb appears as Mayor Collins.

'A Haunting in Salem' is slated for a DVD release on August 23rd, 2011 and will include a 3D widescreen presentation, 5.1 surround sound and a making of featurette.

Actor Bill Oberst Jr. Prepares To Get HAUNTED And Shoot NAKED

Actor Bill Oberst Jr. is not only a  friend of the blog but one hell of a busy scary guy these days. He currently  has no less than four film projects in the works including the lead The Asylum's   spooky 3-D feature A HAUNTING IN SALEM. This guy is definitely making his presence known in the horror community in a big way. Oberst also appears in director Joseph Guzman's exploitation film NUDE NUNS WITH BIG GUNS (2010) which is a film I hope will get a  release sometime this year here in the states.

Source: Press release from Bill Oberst Jr.

(Los Angeles) Actor Bill Oberst Jr. is preparing for back-to-back lead roles in major horror projects: The Asylum's 3-D feature A HAUNTING IN SALEM and Drew Daywalt's ambitious 18th century horror short NAKED.

A HAUNTING IN SALEM begins principal photography tomorrow (April 30) in Los Angeles. Oberst is cast in the lead role of a newly-arrived Sheriff in the community of Salem, Massachusetts. The film co-stars Courtney Abbiati, Jenna Stone and Nicholas Harsin. Asylum favorite Shane Van Dyke directs from a script by H. Perry Horton which spans in time from 1692 to the present.

Oberst jumps directly from wrap on A HAUNTING IN SALEM into the lead in Drew Daywalt's ensemble cast for NAKED, also starring Edin Gali of AMC's series MAD MEN, Maria Olsen of PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF and Gilbert Chavarria. The NAKED script by Daywalt, who recently wrapped production as director on season one episodes of MTV's upcoming horror series DEATH VALLEY, combines elements of Native American spiritual beliefs and Old World European superstitions to create a new mythology set in the New World of the early 1700's. A German settler (Oberst) enlists the help of his brother (Gali) and a Native American (Chavarria) to track down an Orc (Olsen) whom he blames for the death of his son.

Daywalt has enlisted big-name friends to help make the world of NAKED come to life. The film's Orc creature effects will be personally created by frequent Daywalt collaborator Jeff Farley (TROPIC THUNDER, BUFFY, BABYLON FIVE, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, etc) and digital effects will be by Peter Giliberti (SPIDERMAN films, WATCHMEN, PRIEST, etc.)

Set pic from The Bloodlet
Oberst is in the middle of a four-film horror streak; earlier this week he wrapped a cameo in J.R. McGarrity's feature film THE BLOODLET and a lead in Thomas Mentel's dark short OVERTIME. THE BLOODLET shoot, for which Oberst was a living, though decomposing, suicide victim, reconnected him with Dean Jones of American Make-Up and Effects. Jones was Oberst's make-up artist for director Michael Landon Jr.'s TV-movie THE SHUNNING, which recently aired on The Hallmark Channel with Oberst as the male lead, and Jone's protege Heather Galipo did the makeup honors for Oberst's spilled intestines on BLOODLET.

Set pic from Overtime

In writer/director Thomas Mentel's festival-bound short OVERTIME, Oberst plays a factory worker on a midnight shift who begins to see terrifying apparitions in the shadows around the machinery, including the ghost of his long-dead fiancee who wants an embrace; and an animalistic alter-ego of himself in a gas mask.

Exclusive SOMETHING WICKED DWELLS Behind-the-Scenes Pics

Friend of the blog/actor  Bill Oberst, Jr.was nice enough to send some sweet behind-the-scenes pictures from the set of writer/director Waide Aaron Riddle's SOMETHING WICKED DWELLS. The film tells the story of prisoners in an Old New England dungeon confronting the specter of their dead Master. The prisoners beg for mercy only to be dragged to Hell's gallows. Damn, that just sounds awesome and I love Bill's description of the film below.

"Me in the last shot; over the edge and speaking Waide Riddle's gothic poetry in a daze. What could be better?"

If you're not aware of Oberst's work he is and up and coming actor with memorable stints on HBO's southern Gothic vamp series TRUE BLOOD as well as several episodes of the super-addictive 1000 WAYS TO DIE. I first came across his work in the swampland cannibal film DISMAL (2009) and he will next be appearing in the forthcoming film from  RUN! BITCH RUN! (2009) director Joseph Guzman. It's a nasty bit of exploitation called  NUDE NUNS WITH BIG GUNS (2010) which should be getting a release later this year. I think Oberst is definitely one to watch, a horror icon in the making working his way to the top with one memorably disturbing performance after another. Don't take my word for it watch his films and see for yourself. I would also encourage you to check out his recent interview on the Altered Reality Radio podcast, good stuff. http://alteredrealitiesradio.com/arr-blog/192-32511-on-arr-bill-oberst-jr.

*"Me having make-up applied for final sequence by Art Department head Aaron Glazer (that muck was ice-cold!)"

"SOMETHING WICKED DWELLS was a labor of love for cast and crew. The idea was to recapture the Gothic black and white feel of classic Universal Studios horror combined with the literary feel of Poe. The writer and director, Waide Aaron Riddle, calls it "a Renaissance painting in hell" and that pretty well sums it up. It's based on a dark Gothic poem by Riddle and is set in an ancient dungeon where doomed prisoners wait to be dragged one by one into a demon's lair. The whole thing reminded me of Michelangelo's "The Last Judgement" on the Sistine Chapel ceiling; really frightening. It's a short that I would not be surprised to see win awards domestically and especially in Europe. We just wrapped on an amazingly realistic dungeon set in Hollywood and the film is now in post with several festivals already interested in seeing it for their 2011 events. Cast was me, Chris Brady, Troy Mettleider and Fabian Alomar. SOMETHING WICKED DWELLS is on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Something-Wicked-Dwells/100757609993368

"Me in character in an early sequence listening to the demon's roar and knowing that I may be next"
Shoot was a hell of a lot of fun and some of the hardest work I have done as an actor. Not your usual by-the-numbers horror piece. My hat's off to Waide Riddle and his production company Green Ghost Films for doing something different. Oh by the way, I'd like to invite your readers to follow me on Twitter http://twitter.com/billoberstjr and friend me on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/billoberstjr  I follow back and I friend back. It's a pleasure to support McBastard's Masoleum - easily the most intelligent horror blog on the web today!"

your fan, Bill

*"How that make-up looked in final scenes; me losing my marbles; a dearly-departed friend is on dungeon wall."

Bill Oberst is the Devil incarnate in Aashe Aaron's horror feature 333

Super great guy/actor Bill Oberst Jr. sent us an email letting us know he's appearing in the Illusion Film Studios production 333
(formerly Tormented Souls) which is being directed by Australian  writer/producer/dissecting triple threat Aashe Aaron and produced by the master of modern day exploitation Chad Ferrin of SOMEONE'S KNOCKING AT THE  DOOR (2009) and EASTER BUNNY, KILL! KILL! (2006) infamy.

The film's described as "a couple on a romantic roadtrip spend the night at an eerie honeymooner's retreat, which they soon suspect is haunted...or that it's creepy caretakers are up to something far more sinister." Sound awesomely eerie.

Oberst plays "a shadow man with goat eyes who torments the main character, Amy, and pursues her at supernaturally high speed, all the while whispering sweet nothings in her terrified ears like "You're gonna burn Amy!"" Director Aaron described Oberst's character to the actor as "He's like the devil incarnate, with a Johnny Cash style; a real David Lynch moment."" Sounds like yet another unsettling and unsavory characters that Oberst has such an uncanny knack for portraying.

333 is set to commence filming in Topanga Canyon this weekend.

Being the awesome guy that he is Oberst was kind enough to send a make-up test pic from the just-wrapped  SOMETHING WICKED DWELLS, a horrifying "Renaissance Painting In Hell" short about "shackled prisoners in an ancient dungeon waiting to be be dragged into a demon's lair. That's me before and after make-up by Veronica Rodarte of the Cinema Slaughter crew, who is an artist with the airbrush for sure."

I first caught notice of Bill Oberst in the backwoods fright flick DISMAL (2009) a gritty swampland cannibals flick. I would dare say he was the most memorable aspect of that film as the unsettling patriarch of the cannibal clan. I'm  psyched to check him out in RUN! BITCH RUN! (2006) director Joseph Guzman's next project NUDE NUNS WITH BIG GUNS (2010) so keep an eye out for Bill Oberst Jr.. It'll be hard for genre fans to miss him in the coming months with parts in Brandon Slagle's VIVID (2011) and even in an uncredited role as an "emaciated pirate" in Rob Marshall's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (2011) and numerous other projects.

A Letter from DISMAL's Bill Oberst, Jr.

Last week I posted a review for the backwoods cannibal thriller DISMAL (2009) from director Gary King. I thought the film was a bit on the average side o' things but I was wowed by the stand-out performance from actor Bill Oberst, Jr. as Dale - the patriarch of the cannibal clan. Bill was nice enough to reach out the the Mausoleum via email to update us on a some future projects including a few behind-the-scenes set photos. Super excited for the film NUDE NUNS WITH BIG GUNS (2010) in which bill will portray "Brother John". The film is directed by Joseph Guzman whom directed the fantastic exploitation flick RUN! BITCH RUN! (available from Vicious Circle Films) which I reviewed, great stuff. He also mentions a new MTV horror anthology show which i know nothing about, but my interest has been piqued. Bill seems like one hell of a great guy who enjoys playing not-so-nice guys. Thanks for the email and info Bill!

Hey McBastard,

It's Bill, the guy who played Dale in DISMAL. Just read your review from yesterday. "A foreboding and demented bastard" is now officially my favorite review quote of all time! I am putting it, along with a link to the Mausoleum, on my website right now and also tweeted it. I'll be a regular visitor - love the genre and you guys have a great site. I got a couple things coming out that you might be interested in seeing and reviewing (or ripping a new one if they suck) in 2011 including NUDE NUNS WITH BIG GUNS; a Drew Daywalt film called NAKED and a Devanny Pinn gorefest called VIVID that I just wrapped.

And here's a couple links on the films I mentioned in the mail:

NUDE NUNS WITH BIG GUNS on IMDb:

P.S. Ken, here's one more I just got; a behind-the-scenes shot from VIVID of me coming down the alley to creep out the delectable Devanny. Director Brandon Slagle in foreground. I swear, it is so much fun to be repulsive :)

VIVID

VIVID on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/Vivid-the-film/150705361624430

NAKED by Drew Daywalt (cool concept: Orcs run amuk in the 1700's): http://horrorjobs.com/bill-oberst-jr/

Drew is directing MTV's new horror anthology series so will will shoot this one when he is done with their first season in April; co-stars Edin Gali of MADMEN and Maria Olsen of PETER JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS. Creature effects by Jeff Farley (TALES FROM THE CRYPT, BUFFY, etc.) and Peter Giliberti (SPIDER MAN, etc.)

Thanks Ken, for writing back and Merry Christmas ~Bill
