‘VIDEO NASTY’ AUTEUR AND NO-BUDGET HOLLYWOOD AMBITION IN APRIL
On April 26th, Severin Films begins a much-needed reevaluation of the New Orleans exploitation filmmaker Jack Weis via a brand new restoration of infamous video nasty MARDI GRAS MASSACRE and a double feature of lesser-known sleaze efforts CRYPT OF DARK SECRETS and DEATH BRINGS ROSES. Severin’s sister label Intervision Picture Corp. is also back in the mix with SOV hysteria from SONIC THE HEDGEHOG screenwriters Josh Miller & Pat Casey.
MARDI GRAS MASSACRE (1978)
With only five films, New Orleans-based writer/producer/director Jack Weis became one of the most enigmatic figures in ‘70s exploitation. And for his final trashterpiece, Weis delivered a filth-fueled, disco-drenched and gore-soaked epic of butchered hookers, hard-boiled homicide cops and a prissy psycho with an Aztec sacrifice fetish that remains a once-in-a-lifetime sleaze experience. Curt Dawson (BLOOD BATH), Ronald Tanet (CRYPT OF DARK SECRETS) and February ‘75 Playboy Playmate Laura Misch star in this “shocking-yet-hysterical fever dream of regional filmmaking” (Bleeding Skull) with a soundtrack by Dennis Coffey & Mike Theodore (BLACK BELT JONES) and still banned in the UK as one of the original DPP 39 Video Nasties, now featuring a 2K master compiled from the best surviving post-Katrina elements and a revealing new interview with Weis himself.

THE BIG SLEAZY JACK WEIS DOUBLE FEATURE
Perhaps the most bizarre film by New Orleans writer/producer/director Jack Weis (MARDI GRAS MASSACRE), CRYPT OF DARK SECRETS is “71 minutes of supernatural sleaze” (Every ‘70s Movie) featuring voodoo vengeance, a possessed swamp stripper, and multiple feats of knuckleheaded folk horror, newly mastered from the original negative. Thought lost for more than 30 years, DEATH BRINGS ROSES is the Big Easy auteur’s epic of pimps, hookers, mob bosses, double-crosses, a stupefying parade of performances by non-professional locals, and Henny Youngman. Real-life Hollywood tough guy Scott Brady (JOHNNY GUITAR), Oscar® winner Broderick Crawford (ALL THE KING’S MEN) and Hermione Gingold (GIGI) co-star in this French Quarter crime saga that “walks a fine line between utter hilarity and bubbling sleaze” (Bleeding Skull), now scanned in 2K from Weis’ personal 35mm print.
