Christmas doc Best Christmas Movies Ever! is a festive journey through the most beloved Christmas classics of cinema, very much in the vein of 1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever!, it having been written and directed by the writer of 1982, and similarly, originally produced for broadcast on the CW Tv channel where it aired in an abbreviated version, but is presented here on Blu-ray it's uncut version. The doc features interviews with WWE's Matt Hardy and Mick Foley, The Tick's Patrick Warburton, Barry Bostwick (Rocky Horror Picture Show), Fright Night's Chris Sarandon, Rick & Morty's Spencer Grammer, Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Ross Marquand (The Walking Dead), The Mandalorian's Emily Swallow, directors Clay Kaytis (A Christmas Story Christmas), Brian Levant (Jingle All the Way), Brea Grants (Torn Hearts), Darin Scott (Tales from the Hood), Jeremiah S. Chechik (Christmas Vacation), screenwriters Mitch Glazer (Scrooged), Josh Miller (Violent Night), David Berenbaum (Elf), David Hemingson (The Holdovers), Steven E. de Souza (Die Hard), Ashley E. Miller (X-Men: First Class), film critics Sam Rubin, Amanda Salas, Grae Drake, Scott Mantz, Shawn Edwards, and loads more.
They cover a metric shit-ton f Christmas flicks, from heartwarming classics like Miracle on 34th Street, Holiday Inn, White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life, onto modern classics like Home Alone and Elf, The Santa Clause, as well ass comedy classics like A Christmas Story and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, more off beat entries like Christmas Again, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, The Apartment and Eyes Wide Shut, and of course there's plenty of debate about if Die Hard is a Christmas movie (yes, of course it is). They dip their toes into the realm of Christmas horrors as well with Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night and the new xmas/action classic Violent Night, but there definitely was not enough horror talk for this horror-fan, that's a sub-genre which needs it own dedicated doc, someone bring it on! There's also a lot of conversation about the different versions of A Christmas Carol from the 1951 version with Alastair Sim, to the 70's and 80's version, Scrooged (1988) with Bill Murray, and even the Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol (1962) and The Muppet's Christmas Carol (1992) with Michael Cane, and they do not skip over the Rankin/Bass stop-motion flicks either.
There's plenty of color commentary about what makes each of these film so endearing tot he talking heads, why they hold-up or don't, and some behind-the-scenes nuggets from the directors, actors and screenwriters involved with the film. It's a fun, nostalgic Holiday trip, but it didn't necessarily open my eyes to any movies I was not aware of previously, other than reminding me to give Santa Clause: The Movie (1985) a long overdue re-watch, and as someone who watches a lot of bonus features and commentaries, it wasn't really shedding new light on the film's either, but I appreciated the enthusiasm on display. I also appreciated author Alonso Duralde's big white beard which made him look a bit like Santa, and his festive Christmas wear. Kudos to director Brea Grant and screenwriter Josh Miller for sporting horror-themed Christmas threads as well, even if this was probably shot in July, I love the dedication! While it's not a doc that was full of discovery of hidden yuletide gems, it is cinematic comfort food, if you love Christmas flicks the stroll down memory lane is pretty breezy and entertaining.
